Summary

TheWitcherfranchise is beloved by millions of players worldwide. The Witcher 3: Wild Huntbrought the franchise the recognition it deserved from long ago and introduced players to the magical world of The Continent. This title not only featured amazing monsters, great combat mechanics, an outstanding narrative experience, and likable characters, but also allowed players tomake their own decisionsand choose their own dialogue.

In the recent release ofThe Witcher 4trailer, players got to seean older version of Ciri, who not only appears to have gotten much better at fighting, but also seems to have undergone the Trial of the Grasses. This raises many questions aboutThe Witcheruniverse, Ciri and the upcoming sequel in general. To discuss some of them, here aresome things players likely missed in theWitcher 4trailer.

The Witcher 4 Ciri After Drinking Witcher Potion

4Ciri Likely Underwent The Trial Of The Grasses

Drinking A Witcher Potion Would Have Killed Her Otherwise

One of the most surprising aspects ofThe Witcher 4trailer, is that players get to see Ciriconsuming a potionto face the creature in the cave. Longtime fans of the franchise and books would know that this would be impossible, since she never underwent the Trial of The Grasses, so consuming any kind of Witcher potion would be lethal for her. However, many players suspect that Ciri did undergo the Trial of the Grasses at some point betweenthe events ofThe Witcher 3and the new trailer.

As interesting as this is, it’s also arguably impossible, as the mortality rate in children during the Trials is quite high, and for adults, it’s always lethal. Not to mention that a concoction made specifically for women does not exist. The fact that she managed to survive might not agree with the canon up to this point, but maybe CD Projekt RED will address this at some point in the future. During the trailer, Ciri seems to have consumed a vial of Cat, which allows Witchers to see in the dark and makes it easier to fight the creatures of the night.

The Witcher 4 Ciri Using Magic

3Ciri’s Magic Is Getting Stronger

Yen Likely Gave Her More Training

Although there’s a clear record of Ciri being able to use her magic in different instances, it appears to be getting a lot stronger, probably as a result of training for years. Not only does she appear casting a few Witcher Signs, but she also seems to be able to use sorceries, which makes sense due toher Elder Bloodand probably also because of Yen’s training.

This might suggest the players will get to use a ton of new sorceries and maybe even moreWitcher Signswhen the game is released. The way she imbued the chain with which she bound the creature with fire using Igni might also suggest that players will be able to interact with environmental elements even more.

The Witcher 4 Angry Ciri (1)

2There’s A Reference to One Of Geralt’s Famous Lines

Ciri Follows In Geralt’s Footsteps

At the end of the trailer, when Ciri returns to the village to find the would-be sacrifice with a knife plunged into her chest, she’s clearly angered by it and by the ignorance and selfishness of the villagers. When the villagers attempt to explain themselves, saying they wanted the girl to go with the gods, Ciri turns to the man who says this and responds with “There are no gods here, there are only monsters”.

This line is not only epic, but also a callback to one ofThe Witcher 3trailers from back in the day. In it, players see Geralt talking to a group of men after he hunts down what appears to be a Fiend for them. The men seem to be mistreating an innocent woman, which leads to Geralt ending their lives in the blink of an eye and responding with “killing monsters” after the last surviving man asks him what he’s doing. The fact that Ciri also uses a similar line is amazing and might suggest the fate of the man who took the sacrifice girl’s life. This goes to show that Ciri hasn’t forgotten Geralt’s teachings and that she’s ready to deal with the atrocities of her decaying world.

The Witcher 4 Older Ciri

1Many Years Seem To Have Passed

The Gap Could Range From A Few Years, To Decades

When Ciri’s face is first revealed in the trailer, players quickly realize that she looks a lot older than she did inThe Witcher 3.This suggests that a lot of years have passed between the third installment of the franchise and the upcoming title. Now, since Ciri likely underwent theTrial of the Grasses, it’s hard to pinpoint just how long it’s been given that Witchers do not age like regular humans. On top of this, at the moment, there’s no way to know how old Ciri was when she first underwent the Trials, which means that there could only be a 20-year gap, or it could be several decades.

Geralt and Ciri went their separate ways at the end of the last game, which might mean that not seeing an older version of him in the trailer doesn’t necessarily indicate that he’s passed on. However, since there’s so much uncertainty, and it’s impossible to pinpoint exactly how long it’s been, it’s also a possibility that can’t be ruled out. Hopefully, more details aboutThe Witcher 4are revealed in the future, clearing up many of players' doubts, andexplaining a few lore plotholes.
