Summary
TheFPSgenre is extremely popular, as it allows players to participate in adrenaline-rushing situations where they have to face off against dangerous enemies. While it could be argued that the1990s had some of the best FPS titles to date, many great games in this genre have also been released more recently.
With better technology, there comesbetter bullet physicsthat feel quite realistic and complement modern FPS game mechanics rather well. And the same happens with the narrative, as being able to pack more things into an FPS title often means more complex situations. Here are some of thebest FPS games with an over-the-top story. Players should be advised that this list contains spoilers for some of the games below, so please proceed with caution.
TheFar Cryfranchise is known for pitting players against large organizations that they’ll have to fight to survive and preserve freedom. Whether it is a fascist government in South America, a dictatorship in the Himalayas, or a dangerous doomsday cult in a fictional town in rural America, there seems to be no exception to the rule.
AlthoughFar Cry 5has excellent gameplay, powerful weapons, and a lot of serious moments, there are also times when certain aspects feel exaggerated. Not necessarily in a bad way, but it can feel a bit over-the-top here and there.
In a time when adult humor, interesting FPS mechanics with abundant explosions, and creative ways to kill enemies were central aspects in many franchises likeGears of War,Bulletstorminnovated and presented players with a chaotically fun experience.
This title not only presented players with original characters and a brand-new story, but it also featured a very fun campaign and multiplayer modes. Unfortunately, ever since 2011, when the game was first released, there hasn’t been a lot of news around theBulletstormuniverse. However, many players still remember it as one of the most over-the-top FPS games from the early 2010s.
The premise of theWolfensteinfranchise is already quite over-the-top, as it presents players with an alternate reality where the Nazis were never defeated in World War 2, and instead gained control over the world. However,Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossustakes this to an entirely new level by introducing concepts like the reanimation of a severed head, Hitler residing on Venus, pregnant women firing high-caliber weapons, and biologically-augmented supersoldiers.
What makesWolfenstein 2: The New Colossusso great, is that even with all these seemingly ridiculous elements, the story works well, the serious moments remain so, and the comedy does not feel cheap or forced.
There seems to be a debate going on among fans of theFalloutfranchise, as some players claim thatFallout 4is more an RPG than an FPS game, whereas others say the opposite. Whatever the case, it’s undeniable that this game not only presents players with an exciting experience full of action, but also offers a few scenarios that are hard to believe.
Romance options like Gilda Broscoe, as well as many of the mutated characters that play a key role in the story makeFallout 4a great title. Yes, the story is over-the-top, but what else could be expected from a post-apocalyptic world that was nuked to exhaustion? Players who want a challenge and wish to experience the game on the hardest difficulty shouldgive their Companions some of the best weapons availablefor them to level the playing field.
Even when the first game was released back in the early 90s, the premise of theDoomfranchise was already extremely fictitious. After all, the story revolves around a powerful individual who can single-handedly take on the demonic forces of hell without breaking a sweat.
This, in and of itself, makes the story ofDOOM Eternalfeel over-the-top, but not necessarily in a bad way. There’s just something oddly satisfying about crushing vicious demons under the Doomguy’s boots with a masterfully written heavy metal track playing in the background. TheDOOMfranchise is so popular that it has inspired many other titles similar to it. Players who’ve already finishedDOOM Eternaland want totry something similarwill have no shortage of options.
BioShockis one of those FPS games that helped revolutionize the genre and give players a concept that they didn’t know they needed so badly. Set in the fictional underwater city of Rapture, there are many things that are over-the-top in this game’s story.
Not only would it be impossible to build an underwater city in the mid-1940s, but the technology available and the premise of genetic alteration through the consumption of ADAM also seem unlikely, especially for the period the game is set in. However,BioShocksomehow manages to make all this work, and the ending is mind-bending, to say the least. Not as much as that ofBioShock Infinite, but it comes close. This, along with the interestingvillains in the franchise, makesBioShocka title everyone must play at least once.
Although theBorderlandsfranchise did not innovate in terms of the FPS mechanics it offers compared to other games, its art style is one of the things that has helped propel it to the beloved position it currently holds among the gaming community. On top of this, the class system featured in the games is solid, which further complements the experience players can have withthe characters available.
Pandora holds many secrets, and with characters like Face McShooty, there’s no shortage of fun for players to have—even when things can sometimes feel over-the-top in a few ways.
Yet another title in theBioShockfranchise,BioShock Infiniteis, arguably, the best installment in the series. Not only does this game take players out of Rapture and brings them to the sky-high utopic city of Columbia, but it also has one of the most mind-bending endings in the entire history of gaming.
The idea that a floating city would exist in 1912 is, in and of itself, quite over-the-top. However, when considering thatBioShock Infinitealso features multiple parallel dimensions, paradoxical scenarios, and vials of Vigor that give the player character, Booker DeWitt, superhuman abilities, the floating city bit seems the most believable. All these elements makeBioShock Infinitean outstanding game that will have players entertained for hours, and scratching their heads once they complete it. Unfortunately, any information aboutan upcoming BioShock gameis scarce, so players who fell in love with the franchise will have to keep waiting.
