Summary

Fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival ofThe Last of UsSeason 2which will adapt Naughty Dog’s second game in the franchise,The Last of Us Part 2. Similar to the first season,The Last of UsSeason 2 is shaping up to be a close adaptation of its source material and that is particularly evident in the latest teaser trailer.

Season 1 ofThe Last of Usintroduced the TV audience to Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) an unlikely duo tasked with trekking across a post-apocalyptic America full of dangerous fungal zombies. While there were some exceptions, for the most part,The Last of UsSeason 1 was beat-for-beat, the same as Naughty Dog’s game. In Season 2, however, the series has a more difficult task of adapting a much longer game with a more complex narrative structure. That being said, scenes from the trailer so far have contained many exciting Easter eggs and references to the game that fans can look forward to.

This article contains spoilers forThe Last of Us Part 2.

Abby’s Flashback

One of the key motifs that players continue to return to throughoutThe Last of Us Part2 is the hospital in Salt Lake City. The hospital is a key part of Abby’s trauma as it’s where her father was killed by Joel when he rescued Ellie at the end of the first game. This event iswhat drives Abby’s vengeance, and she often relives it in dreams that players experience. The latestThe Last of UsSeason 2 teaser opens with the red lights and sirens of the hospital sequence, which shows Abby walking down a familiar hallway. The inclusion of this scene is also a big hint thatThe Last of UsSeason 2 will show Abby’s point of view and might be chronological rather than following the timeline of the game. The teaser also includes the first hint at Kaitlyn Dever’s performance as Abby as she delivers lines in the voiceover.

It doesn’t matter if you have a code like me. There are just some things everyone agrees are just wrong.

Ellie and Dina’s Dance

The dance scene in Jackson was one of the first scenes used to promoteThe Last of Us Part 2at E3 in 2018. It depicts Ellie’s first kiss with her best friend (soon-to-be girlfriend) Dina. It chronologically takes place before the start of the game but is depicted later in the story via flashbacks. The short sequence is a tease of Dina (Isabela Merced) and Ellie’s romance, with the sequence looking almost identical to the way it plays out in the game. However, its inclusion in Season 2 would be a surprise as the flashback occurs quite late into the game, meaning the series might bechanging the timeline quite a bitin the adaptation process.

Attack on Jackson

The first teaser forThe Last of UsSeason 2 spent a fair bit of time in the Jackson prologue section of the game, which introduces characters like Jesse (Young Mazino) and a new characterplayed by Catherine O’Hara. The second teaser is more focused on Seattle but does include some shots from Jackson, particularly focusing on the settlement preparing for an attack in the snow. Joel’s brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna) can be seen gathering at the walls around the settlement with a rifle in hand. This particular sequence did not occur in the game so it seems like it may be something newly created for the series. This portion of the game does include an attack by a horde of infected who chase Abby, which leads her to come across Joel and Tommy who are out on patrol. It’s unclear whether this will be a new sequence in addition to that scene or whether this is the wayThe Last of Usplans to cross Joel and Abby’s paths.

Isaac

Jeffrey Wright is reprising his role of Isaac in Season 2 ofThe Last of Usbut the second trailer includes an additional shot of the actor as the WLF leader. Wright has already hinted at anexpanded role for IsaacinThe Last of UsSeason 2, but his inclusion in the new season adds to the theory that the story will be more chronological in the show as his character only appears in Abby’s sections of the game.

The Hospital

A scene at the end of the newThe Last of Usteaser seems to indicate how far into the story the new episodes will go. The scene in question shows Ellie walking down a corridor bathed in red light while holding a gun.The Last of UsSeason 1 was known for emulating shots from the game almost identically, and the closest scene this shot resembles is one that occurs at the end of Day 2, when Ellie hunts downAbby’s accomplice Nora. In the game, after an extended chase sequence through a Seattle hospital, Ellie manages to corner Nora in an abandoned corner of the building and proceeds to torture her for Abby’s whereabouts. If this is indeed the scene that this shot belongs to, it suggests that all of Ellie’s first and second days in Seattle will be covered in the new season.

Seraphites

The Seraphites (aka Scars) are a deadly new enemy faction introduced inThe Last of Us Part 2and a further glimpse of them is included in the new teaser. The Seraphites are known for using tools like scythes as weapons and one brief shot shows a hooked scythe scraping over a tree trunk. There are multiple scenes from the game to which this could belong, or it could also be an entirely new sequence. The most likely scenario from the game is that this shot is from the end of Abby’s first chapter in Seattle which sees hercaptured by the Seraphitesin the forest. The background of the image shows someone seemingly standing on a tree trunk, which could be Abby or one of the other captives in the scene who are hanging from their necks from trees.

ThenewThe Last of UsSeason 2 teaseris barely 60 seconds long and includes some shots that have been glimpsed in previous trailers, but there are enough new scenes to whet fans’ appetite and increase the excitement for the series’ April debut.
