Summary
Long-timeAnimal Crossingfans have voiced their appreciation that the “useless” grass degradation feature is stuck in the past. TheAnimal Crossingseries has been going strong since 2002, and some veterans are thankful this feature wasn’t carried forward toNew Horizons.
As newAnimal Crossinggames have been released, fresh features have been added, and a handful have been lost to time. This includes fan-favorite features like the Police Station, Observatory, Mystery Island Tours, and Wishing Well.New Horizonsdid many new things for the series, including placing furniture items outside, the ability for a player to terraform their island to their liking, and an extensive DIY crafting system. WhileAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsis feature-richcompared to earlier titles, many players regret that some things didn’t make it to the Nintendo Switch game. However, grass degradation is not a feature that most fans wish was inNew Horizons, and many gamers are openly celebrating its loss.

Reddit user Scorbunny_Ear recently shared an image highlighting a major problem with grass degradation inAnimal Crossing: City Folk. The photo shows a Villager standing next to their house, which is in the middle of a large dirt patch. Small sections of snow are the only visual indicator that they’re in the Winter season beyond the date underneath the clock in the top-left corner. This image highlights a common problem thatCity Folkplayers have in which the house is affected by the degradation the most, because it’s where every Villager starts their day. With minimal snow surrounding their house, the player’s ability to doseasonalAnimal Crossingactivitieslike building snowmen is negatively impacted.
This Animal Crossing Feature May Be Best Left in the Past
The useless aspect of this feature was highlighted by the top response by sumemodude to the post, which also states that lockingtheAnimal CrossingGold Watering Canbehind it is “torture.” ForCity Folkplayers to earn the Gold Watering Can, they must maintain a perfect town status for 15 days. This status is hard to reach with grass degradation, and some players have reported dirt paths being generated simply by walking. Grass degradation was a staple inCity Folk, and it allowed players to create natural paths just by using a routine route. The dirt paths generated from grass degradation won’t change each season, making snowy ground significantly rarer in towns with Villagers who like to explore their town thoroughly.
While manyAnimal Crossingfans are celebrating grass degradation being stuck in the past, it may not be gone forever. AsNintendo may be working on anotherAnimal Crossingtitle, future releases could include this feature.
