Summary
Arcanejust ended, but the hit animated series inspired byLeague of Legendswas a huge hit that spawned several spinoffs. One of the writers shared where they were taking the next shows.
League of Legendsoffers a vast universe with diverse continents and unique regions. Each region has its own magic and compelling history.Arcaneshowcased the vast difference between the two regions,Piltover and Zaun. Piltover, called the “City of Progress,” is home to advanced technology. On the other hand, Zaun is a city beneath it deemed dangerous and polluted. The city is filled with crime, hardship and monster champions. However, the people there were struggling to survive day by day. One of theArcanewriters said they wanted to take the spinoff to another region and move on from Piltover and Zaun.
Arcanewriter Amanda Overton spoke with GamesRadar about the future of the Arcane spinoffs. She shared that one of the regions she wanted to explore was Ionia. “I’m really excited for looking at Ionia,” she told the outlet, “because I think they have a much more Eastern-centred narrative storytelling and visuals, that is something completely different from whatArcanedid in Season 1.” She added that she wanted to take the next story to a new region to give it a brand new start. She also felt that theyfeatured Noxus heavilyonArcane, so she wanted to stir the new show in a new direction. “With Noxus, we did bring a lot of Noxus intoArcane. So to me, it would be like, ‘let’s do something totally new,'” she continued.Arcaneco-creator Christian Linke previously shared that there were three shows in development afterArcaneended and they were based in three regions – Noxus, Ionia and Demacia.
Aside from picking the region of her choice, Overton admitted that she loved thechampions from the different regionsand their unique stories. Among the things that piqued her interest were the female leaders in Freljord, a harsh, icy tundra occupied by tribal societies. “There’s just so many great champions to dig into. There are so many rich areas there. I hope that they get to see what a matriarchy looks like, because I don’t think we’ve seen that on TV before - up in the Freljord, having a matriarchy, I was like ‘hell yeah, I’ve never seen that,'” she added. The writer said there were too many unique and fun characters in Runeterra, suggesting that fans can expect more aside fromthe three planned spinoffs.
It’s not surprising that Overton chose Ionia because it’s one of the most beautiful regions inLeague of Legends. The region is visually stunning, with serene forests, mystical temples, vibrant nature, and ancient monuments. It gives off an ethereal and dreamlike vibe as it is both magical and spiritual. The people there strive to live in peace and harmony, which is very different from the chaos fans witnessed inArcane. Also, the place offers a perfect sense of balance in life, magic and battle. Ionians are rooted in their spiritual life, which is evident in their culture and tradition—the people in the region practice martial arts and meditation. However, even if it’s not as chaotic as Zaun, there’s a brewing tension betweenIoniaandNoxus, not to mention the internal struggles within the region. Overall, Ionia is a great region to explore; it’s magical and wonderful but has enough conflict to draw drama and action. Bringing the story to Ionia is definitely a breath of fresh air fromArcane.
