There weren’t a huge number of horror games that were only releasedon the PlayStation 3, but there were some other titles that gave a similar experience.Rainis such a game, not exactly fitting exact preconceptions of a horror game, but is definitely a melancholic, bittersweet, uneasy, and artistic title.

The game takes place while it is raining, with the player traversing Paris all the while evading entities that will track them down. The player and the enemies exist within the rain, and stepping out of it will make the player invisible, causing enemies to stop following. The ambiance mixed with the fixed camera angles make it reminiscent ofResident EvilandSilent Hillgames. However, while it isn’t as forceful with the horror as those franchises,Raincan still be an uneasy game to play, and would be perfect for those that don’t deal with horror well, but are looking to get into the genre.

The late 2000s and early 2010s were a goldmine for fans of the shooter genre. With releases fromCall of Duty, Halo, Battlefield,Gears of War,andCrysisto name but a few, there were a plethora of games to enjoy. Among them, theKillzoneseries was another prominent franchise released exclusively for the PlayStation, withKillzone 2and3launching for the PlayStation 3.Killzonedabbled a bit more into the horror, bringing a gritty and brutal nature to its gameplay compared to some of its more action-y contemporaries.

Being FPS games, there are a variety of weapons for the player to utilize, fighting through graphically impressive games that are still able to keep up even today. Both games are similar to each other, given that they were released in a close timeframe. There are also the occasional vehicles that can be used.

TheKillzonegamesmight not be as heavy with the horror compared to some that are definitely set out to be horror games, but they manage to show the horrific nature of combat. It is gritty and brutal, with blood and violence abound that could, without a doubt, make some players feel uneasy.

Daturais an interesting game, feeling like interactive art more than anything. It isn’t precisely a horror game per say, but it is definitely acreepy game, and has its unsettling moments.

The main gameplay takes place within a forest where the player walks around and explores it. However, the ambiance fits right in with a horror game, with just the noises of the player, and the forest. All the while, fog encompasses the forest, echoing theSilent Hillgames. Grand musical pieces can come in and disrupt the unsettling ambiance, but it almost makes it more creepy when the music fades away, as the player is left with just themselves once again. While exploring the forest, the player will come across different locations that will give them various visions. This is the main gameplay loop, and will continue until the game’s finale.

Yakuza: Dead Soulsis a weird game; impressive consideringYakuzastandards. Normally a beat-em-up franchise dealing with the grim underworld of the yakuza (even if a bit outlandish itself),Yakuza: Dead Soulsflips the script, and is a zombie survival game, feeling as though the series mixed withResident Evil.

The game features familiar faces from the series, notably Goro Majima andKiryu Kazama, but fighting zombies this time. Combat is executed with weapons, mainly firearms, which can be used in an auto-aim mode, or via manually aiming them. There are various zombie types for the player to kill, which can be fought with special attacks named Heat Snipes, similar to the Heat Actions found in the main games. It is undoubtedly an odd game, but anyone who enjoys games similar toResident Evil 5, or evenDead Rising, should get a kick out of it.

Among the heavy hitters of the horror genre, such asResident EvilorDead Space, theSirenseries has somewhat gone by the wayside. Developed by the director of the firstSilent Hillgame,Sirenwas the first in the series, being a survival horror game.Siren: Blood Curseis a re-imagining of the first original game, changing some of the gameplay.

The game takes place in a cursed village within Japan, in which the player evades enemies while playing from a third-person perspective. The main focus of gameplay is stealth, having to sneak past and hide from enemies while progressing. There are some weapons for the player to find, but characters can only carry a single weapon, adding to the layer of helplessness.
