While Lickitung’s qualities in battle may not suit every player, its cute appearance, funny voice in the anime, and tendency to eagerly lick anyone it comes across, temporarily paralyzing them in the process, caught the attention of many players in the early days.
Over on Reddit,Pokemon GOplayer TheSilentOne34 shared their odd moment when they encountered a tonguelessLickitungin the wild. A pair of screenshots demonstrate the Lickitung with nothing but a black void appearing in its mouth, and its iconic tongue missing entirely. Surprisingly, even after capturing the Pokemon and adding it to their collection, the Lickitung didn’t regain its tongue. The Lickitung is otherwise pretty ordinary, and still retains its Lick move, which would be particularly weird to see it use.
Why is This Lickitung Missing its Tongue?
Pokemon GOisn’t a stranger to bugs, including those impacting its 3D models. Everything from Pokemon to player trainers have appeared with oddities, like bulging eyeballs, teeth showing through the face, and missing parts like this Lickitung. The exact wayPokemon GOdisplays its models isn’t clear, but in some cases, it seems as though parts of model meshes either aren’t properly loaded or are semi-transparent for some reason. In this case, it seems the mesh for Lickitung’s tongue is separate from the rest of the Pokemon, and it didn’t load correctly when the Pokemon spawned.
Numerous players have been amused by the Lickitung, coming up with more appropriate names for it, like “Gummigum,” “Lackatung,” or “Lackingtung.” Some joked about the wintery timing of the Lickitung discovery, comparing it to the iconicA Christmas Storymovie, suggesting that the Lickitung had lost its tongue due to licking a frozen pole and getting stuck.
As far as bugs go inPokemon GO, this one isn’t too problematic. Somebugs inPokemon GOhave caused major issuesfor players, including those that have made it more difficult to catch Pokemon. Whether this Lickitung will regain its tongue upon reloading the game remains to be seen, but in the meantime, it’s a pretty unique bug that shouldn’t harm gameplay in any significant way.
