Fans ofCall of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Zombies mode are rejoicing over the recent launch of its latest map, with Citadelle des Morts only building on the positive momentum that has surrounded the title since it was released in October. The launch Zombies maps of the game did well to kick things off, but there was still a large amount of pressure on Citadelle des Morts to make a lot of improvements to the overall quality ofBO6Zombies while also offering a fresh and unique experience to the title.
It had been known for a while, for example, thatCall of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Citadelle des Morts would introduce a new perk, ammo mod, and special enemy to the game, with this new enemy type in particular being a source of a lot of debate before the map’s release. A lot of controversy already existed around the likes of Manglers and Abominations from their presence in Liberty Falls and Terminus, and many fans assumed that this new enemy type for Citadelle des Morts was simply going to be another re-used asset from pastCoDZombies experiences. Despite this skepticism, Citadelle des Morts introduced the brand-new Doppelghast enemy to Zombies, being a positive step in the right direction forBlack Ops 6’s future content.

Citadelle des Morts' Doppelghast Breathes New Life into Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
The tense and addictive gameplay ofCall of DutyZombieshas been complimented by the presence of special enemy types for quite some time now, with these imposing figures often possessing a lot of unique combat mechanics that can change the landscape of a given map by increasing its difficulty and variety.Black Ops 6predictably brought this element of Zombies forward for its portrayal of the mode, while also appealing to fans by honoring the traditional gameplay of Zombies by renewing the franchise’s focus on round-based maps as opposed to more open-world experiences.
Acrossthe launch maps of Liberty Falls and Terminus, players can expect to come into contact with elite and special enemies like the Mangler, Abomination, and Amalgam, which possess things like weak spots and unique attacks to go with their distinctive designs and high-health pools. While these zombies can spice up the gameplay experiences of these maps, the Mangler was first introduced toCoDas far back asBlack Ops 3, with the Abomination first debuting in 2020’sCold War.
The lack of huge originality withinBlack Ops 6’s elite and special enemies was considered quite underwhelming for some fans and, while the Amalgam is an original introduction to the franchise, all three of these enemy types have been at the center of a wider shared controversy in recent months. Prior to the launch of Citadelle des Morts, thespawn rate of special and eliteCoDenemieswas massive at higher rounds, making long-lasting Zombies matches a tedious and unfairly difficult slog in most circumstances. This led to a damaging first impression of elite and special enemies in the eyes of many, putting all the more pressure on Citadelle des Morts to set things back on the right track.
Black Ops 6’s Doppelghast Covers All the Bases That Past Enemies Missed
Many theories pointed towards the pre-existing Mimic from past Zombies experiences as the new enemy for Citadelle des Morts, especially given howthe Mimic appeared inBlack Ops 6’s campaign, yet Treyarch thankfully gave fans a brand-new opponent in the form of the Doppelghast. The Doopelghast offers a needed change from the lumbering and tanky special and elite enemies that preceded it, instead offering rapid and unpredictable movements with its range of attack styles and high maneuverability.
The Doppelghast additionally has a much smaller health pool than the likes of the Abomination or even Mangler, with the new enemy finding a great balance of health and spawn frequency that avoids the same criticisms as older enemy types. The overall themes, feel, secrets, andweapons of Citadelle des Mortsare already proving to be a hit with fans, and the introduction of the Doppelghast is hopefully a sign of things to come from Treyarch inBlack Ops 6’s future.
