The BlumhousehorrormovieM3GANtold a wildly entertaining (and just plain wild) story about a killer doll who is meant to be a friend for lonely children, and now another film is telling a scary story about robots.
As reported byBloody Disgusting, there is a new trailer forCompanion, which isproduced by Zach Cregger, who wrote and directedthe intense 2022 horror movieBarbarian.
Although horror fans might have heard that this is ahorror movie about robots, theCompaniontrailer shares a few more details. The moviestars Sophie Thatcheras a robot named Iris. When talking about her relationship with Josh (Jack Quaid), Iris says:
“There have been two moments in my life when I was happiest. The first was the day I met Josh. And the second was the day I killed him.”
The movie appears to be full of twists and turns and, along withthe Lucy Hale movieF Marry Kill, tells a fascinating story of a relationship gone horribly wrong.Companionalso follows in the tradition offunny, campy horror movies likeM3GANas there is a great scene when Josh asks “Are you breaking up with me?” and Iris says “It’s not you, it’s me.” It will be interesting to see ifCompanionincludes other jokes about modern dating. Since one of the shots in the trailer shows Iris covered in blood, it’s clear thatCompanionhas a sense of humor but some gory scenes, too.
Drew Hancock wrote and directed the film, which also includes cast membersMegan Suri, Lukas Gage, Harvey Guillén, and Rupert Friend. According toThe Hollywood Reporter, Hancock is also writing and directingMy Wife and I Bought a Ranch, which is being developed for Amazon MGM Studios.
Thatcher has become a staple of the horror genre as she stars in the gory teen dramaYellowjacketsandthe Hugh Grant horror filmHeretic. In an interview withThe Cut, she talked aboutthe scary opening scene ofCompanionwhere her character isn’t very likable. She said:
“At the beginning, I’m handcuffed and screaming and then it goes into this plea for my boyfriend to still love me. I’ve never had a scene that has taken so many different turns, but Jack Quaid is a really f***ing good and present actor. When in doubt, just think about the other person. I’ve related to being codependent in relationships, so it was easy to tap into that feeling.”
It’s common to seeeerie dolls in horror moviesand this trope is always a lot of fun to watch. But it’s rare to see a character start a relationship with someone who he then realizes is a robot, which is what appears to be happening here.Companionwill be in theaters on January 31st, 2025, and fans will be able to see what happens to Iris and Josh. Chances are that the movie will have more than a few surprises.
