Summary

By the timeDark Souls 3was first released, FromSoftware was already a critically acclaimed developer that had given players two amazing prequels set in the same universe. However, it’s probably safe to say that thepowerful weapons, challenging bosses, andresistant armor setsin the third installment of the franchise, make it the best, by far.

During their playthrough, players can choose a swift build that relies onDexterity weapons, or invest every single Soul they collect in the Strength attribute, allowing them to wield massive weapons, including Ultra Greatswords and Greataxes. Here’severy Greataxe in Dark Souls 3, ranked.

Dark Souls 3 - Greataxe

188

Scaling

Strength (D), Dexterity (E)

TheGreataxeisn’t flashy by any means, as it’s simply a big axe that players can wield to hack their enemies to bits. The first time players get to see this weapon is at the hands of the tall Hollow creatures at the beginning of the wall of Lothric. Without upgrades, the Greataxe already deals a whopping 188 points of Physical Damage, which is quite formidable.

However, that raw power comes at a cost, as it requires 32 Strength and 8 Dexterity to wield, which calls for a decent number of Souls. Players who want agility and swift attacks shouldfocus on a Dexterity buildinstead.

Dark Souls 3 - Great Machete

167

While it has an unconventional appearance for an axe, theGreat Macheteis still cataloged under the Greataxe category inDark Souls 3. Boasting a long, sharp blade that has a decent range, this weapon is capable of dealing 167 points of Physical Damage. It’s also more forgiving in terms of Strength requirements than the Greataxe, as it only needs players to have 24 Strength and 10 Dexterity.

Dark Souls 3 - Dragonslayer Greataxe

Combined with agood armor for Poise builds, the Great Machete is a weapon of mass destruction that should be taken seriously.

Dark Souls 3 - Earth Seeker

Strength (D), Dexterity (E), Faith (D)

ManyDark Soulsfans would agree that one of the toughest fights inDark Souls 3is against the Dragonslayer Armour in the late stages of the game. This formidable enemy combines swift attacks with its Greataxe, along with shield bashes that can kill players in a few hits.

The reward for defeating this intimidating creature is theDragonslayer Greataxe, one of thebest boss weapons, as it hits like a truck and looks amazing in the process. On the downside, this weapon requires a whopping 40 Strength to wield. However, it scales with Strength, Dexterity and Faith, which complements it nicely.

Dark Souls 3 - Black Knight Greataxe

154

Strength (C), Faith (D)

Players who have not yet played theAshes of AriandelDLC will probably not know what this weapon is or what it can do. As players explore this snowy, dangerous area, they’ll often come across the infamous Millwood Knights and Chieftain. These monster-sized Vikings wield massive axes that can deal great damage, and players who like them can get one for themselves through exploration and combat.

Earth Seeker’s Physical Damage isn’t great by any means, but it has a decent Strength and Faith requirement to wield and scales with both attributes. Players who are struggling with completing the DLC should make sure they have alreadycollected all the available Undead Bone Shardsin the game, as it will make things a lot easier for them.

Dark Souls 3 - Yhorm’s Great Machete

216

Strength (C), Dexterity (D)

Black Knights have been in theDark Soulsuniverse since the firstDark Soulsgame, presenting players with a formidable challenge that requires determination and quick dodges to survive. On top of dealing ridiculous amounts of damage, Black Knights are also very resilient, which means that players will have to hit them several times to kill them.

Along their journey, players will encounter Black Knights who are wielding either huge swords, spears or theBlack Knight Greataxe. This weapon’s base Physical Damage stands at 216 points, which is great. However, the requirements to wield it are not so forgiving, as 36 Strength and 18 Dexterity are needed. The scaling with these attributes isn’t great, but also not terrible.

Dark Souls 3 - Demon’s Greataxe

185

Strength (C)

Facing Yhorm for the first time in the Profaned Capital is an experience that most players remember forever. Not only is the giant’s size very intimidating, but figuring out that a special weapon must be used to kill him isn’t always easy.

Once players manage to bring down the massive Lord of Cinder, they’ll have the chance to get his machete.Yhorm’s Great Machetehits like a truck, looks amazing, and, when combined with Yhorm’s Greatshield, becomes a force to be reckoned with regardless of the challenges that may present themselves.

Strength (C), Dexterity (E), Intelligence (D), Faith (D)

Lastly, there’s theDemon’s Greataxe. This massive weapon has been a part of theDark Soulsfranchise since the first game, and even then, it was overpowered, to say the least. This weapon does not deal a stunning amount of Physical Damage; however, its strength lies in its scaling properties.

The Demon’s Greataxe scales with Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, and Faith, making it one of the most complete and versatile weapons in the game. Granted, the scaling with some attributes, such as Dexterity isn’t great, but having so many options allows for a more balanced build. If used properly, the Demon’s Greataxe is one of those weapons that canmake the game feel too easy.
