This year,Destiny 2released what arguably was the best expansion ever for the game and the franchise as a whole in the form of The Final Shape, reaching an all-time high on multiple fronts - including community morale and player numbers. However, multiple controversies tied to either Bungie as a company or the game itself started to make it hard forDestiny 2releases to shine. Episode 1’s reception was lukewarm, but the bigger issues came with Revenant. Between the lack of crafting andDestiny 2’s Tonic controversy, multiple unresolved bugs affecting the game started to take a toll, especially considering the Dawning event’s state and yet another community-wide debate.
WhileDestiny 2’s seasonal events can be hit or miss, mostly because they tend to be seen as a form of FOMO that forces players to grind for limited-time loot, the Dawning in 2024 is arguably in the worst shape it’s ever been. There are several bugs affecting the gameplay loop, like baking the event-exclusive cookies not counting toward the Triumphs and challenges tied to the event. However, one of the most problematic parts of this year’s Dawning event is that it came with the usual event card bundle, which was free to claim for some Guardians on launch and then was patched for everyone.
Destiny 2 Shot Itself in The Foot With The Dawning 2024
At first, players who noticed thatDestiny 2’s event cardfor the Dawning was free to claim thought it might be Bungie working some Christmas magic to gift players some cosmetics. Yet, it turned out to be a bug, as reported by Bungie on social media, to which the comment was that the studio was working on a fix and that the event card’s content would remain free for those who claimed it, and otherwise it would return to its intended price of 1,000 Silver.
Destiny 2’s event card for theDawning 2024includes an exclusive Shader, Sparrow, and Exotic emote that can be claimed immediately, and then a Ghost Shell, a Legendary emote, a Transmat effect, and a Ghost Projection to be claimed when completing Dawning challenges while the card is unlocked.

The general response to this decision was that of discontent, as players only had a small window of time to try and claim some free cosmetics before the patch came. Multiple fans reported that they got it and many of their friends and family didn’t or vice versa, which exacerbated this sense of bitterness tied to the event. The consensus is that Bungie should have bitten the bullet and given the event card for free to all, which would have built goodwill with the community. Instead,Destiny 2’s Dawning eventis now being bashed online not only for its numerous glitches, but also for the strange decision not to budge on a $10 cosmetic that players believe not to be very popular anyway.
Destiny 2’s Dawning 2024 is Yet Another Bug-Fest
There are other problems that are marring the experience of the Dawning this year, including the fact thatDestiny 2’s new Mistral Lift Void linear fusion riflecan’t be focused, meaning it’s harder to get the rolls one would like. In the case of Mistral Lift, the god roll is Envious Arsenal and Bait and Switch, which players are struggling to get for this very reason. On top of that, Bungie initially disabled the event card and its associated challenges, meaning that players couldn’t progress them even as they met the requirements.
This is in addition to the many unsolved issues in the game, such as the Shadowshot: Deadfall Super for the Hunter not working in theVesper’s Host Dungeonor the Ballidorse Wrathweavers Exotic for the Warlock being disabled for weeks. The game is arguably in the worst state it’s been this year, mostly because of lingering glitches and new ones being discovered with each update, and that’s why the Dawning’s reception has been quite disastrous. Still, the factor that made it worse was the decision not to make the event card free, further bringing community morale down.
