Summary

Destiny 2’s Revenant Episode is about to get its second seasonal event with the Dawning 2024 coming out tomorrow, and while this release has had a few ups and good changes, the overall reception for the Episode has been more on the negative side. One of the main culprits of this is the fact that Revenant has a lot of active bugs at the moment, some of which resulted in items or builds being disabled in the entire game or some parts of it, all whileDestiny 2’s Tonic controversyis still raging. With crafting out of the window and perk weighting issues confirmed, one solution from Bungie was to make the Vesper’s Host Dungeon have double drops for two weeks - proving a change with Dungeon loot is necessary.

Unlike Raids,Destiny 2’s Dungeons only offer randomly generated loot with no options for crafting. Without the weekly red-border chests inDestiny 2Raids and the ability to craft weapons, typically paired with fewer encounters or more diluted loot tables for each of them, getting good rolls in this activity type can be quite the nightmare. What follows is that Episode 3, Heresy, may have to do what every other season and Episode has avoided so far - buff Dungeon loot.

Destiny 2’s Double Dungeon Loot Couldn’t Fix a Bigger Issue

How Destiny 2’s Perk Weighting Proved Dungeon Loot Needs Changing

Destiny 2’s perk weighting controversywas brought to light because Vesper’s Host has one of the best weapons in the game in the possible rewards for its first encounter, the VS Chill Inhibitor grenade launcher. One of the top guns in the game for DPS, VS Chill Inhibitor led to a lot of players farming Vesper’s Host for the god roll soon after the Dungeon was released. However, many discovered that the god roll was not even in the most commonly used rolls on sites likelight.gg, and players found a correlation between the distance between perks and their rarity, which Bungie confirmed.

TheVS Chill Inhibitor god rollis Spike Grenades + Envious Arsenal + Bait and Switch, currently available at The Tower for free if players have completed Vesper’s Host at least once.

Even though Bungie made changes to prevent this from happening and evengave multipleDestiny 2god rolls awayfor free at Banshee-44, including that for VS Chill Inhibitor, the perk weighting and Dungeon farming experience was definitive proof that changes to Dungeon loot are needed. For example, alongside the god roll giveaway, Bungie gave Vesper’s Host double loot for two weeks, which made farming the Dungeon feel much better. Even though this works, it can’t be the solution to Dungeon loot.

Why Destiny 2’s Dungeon Loot Should Be Revamped

This is because each encounter tends to have five or more items in its respective loot table, with half being armor pieces, and with weapons having typically around eight perks per column, not counting columns 1 and 2. As such, the chances of getting a specific weapon roll from Dungeons are extremely slim, even with double drops. Double drops do help when crafting is out of the picture, and they might be the next best solution if Bungie doesn’t want to make Dungeon weapon craftable. Either way, starting with Episode 3,Destiny 2’s Dungeon lootshould be improved to favor players' time and effort in some way.

Be it via crafting, permanent double drops, or even attunement for specific weapons to drop more frequently, it’s clear now more than ever that the experience of farming Dungeons for loot is far from ideal. If anything, it’s a symptom of a bigger problem that has to do withDestiny 2’s looter-shooter identity, and it’s not something that Bungie can ignore for much longer. Giving players some boost to drop chances for specific items can help with retention, too, especially sinceDestiny 2’s Revenant weaponsshowed that lacking crafting and relying on RNG doesn’t do anyone favors.

While crafting may not be the best approach, some form of loot attunement may give players more freedom with what they are chasing and also retain the current one-item-per-encounter approach. It remains to be seen if Bungie does anything about this, butDestiny 2’s Episode 3would be the best time to start revamping some of its looter-shooter mechanics ahead of the release of Frontiers.
