This has been a tough year forDragon Ballfans. Akira Toriyama’s passing was one of the saddest news this year, and impacted everyone, leaving not only fans mourning, but alsoseveral manga artistsshocked by the news.

Dragon Ball Daima, a new anime that debuted in October, was supposed to be a fun celebration for the franchise’s 40th anniversary, but, while the anime is indeed fun, it also suddenly became Toriyama’sswan songDragon Ballseries, giving it a totally different meaning for many.

Since March,Dragon Ball Supermanga, penned by Toyotaro with Toriyama’s supervision, has been on hiatus. While there is no news regarding the series returning to a regular schedule,it was announced during Jump Festa 2025 that it will be getting a special chapter in February 2025 inV-Jumpmagazine.

The Series Has Not Been Canceled

While no news has been shared about the manga returning from hiatus, they have also not officially canceled it, which means it is still likely Toyotaro plans to keep serializing it. News about the hiatus might be dropped alongside the new chapter in February, though.

Toyotaro Kept Working for the Franchise on Other Fronts in 2024

The manga has not been getting any content, and it’s understandable that Toyotaro would have a hard time trying to continue it without Toriyama (for both emotional and technical reasons). But he has been working with the franchise and recently published a one-shot forDragon Ball Super Divers, a new arcade game released in Japan. It’s hard to write two stories at the same time, so he had probably putDiversas his priority in the last months.

ThelatestDragon Ball Superchaptersbrought an end to the Tournament of Power arc, and starting new arcs can be very challenging. Also, there are still threeSuperchapters that have been published but not compiled into a volume yet. Toyotaro likely intends to keep serializing it, but might to be trying to figure out how to continue the story alone.
