The world-renowned mangaka, Akira Toriyama sadly passed earlier this year, leaving many sad and in shock. Ever since then, many mangakas have paid tribute to him, as he and his work,Dragon Ball, changed the manga industry and touched lives.
WithDragon Ball’s40th anniversary, many mangaka, both young and old, have paid tribute to Toriyama and his revolutionary work by redrawing a Dragon Ball Volume cover for the Dragon Ball Super Gallery project. Oda, One Piece’s mangaka, has always been one of Toriyama’s biggest followers, and he recently paid tribute to him by participating in the project.

Dragon Ball is now a series that is 40 years old. The series was first released in 1984 by the late mangaka of the series that passed earlier this year, Akira Toriyama.
As a commemoration of this major milestone for the series, theDragon Ball SuperGallery Project was held.

Eiichiro Oda, the mangaka ofOne Piece, participated in it. For his contribution, he redrew the manga cover of volume 42 of Dragon Ball.This cover features Goku, Dragon Ball’s main character.
Oda’s Relation With Toriyama
Oda has always admired Toriyama, even going as far as claiming him to be a God. One Piece, his work, takes heavy inspiration from Toriyama’s Dragon Ball, as do most Shonen manga, due to the revolutionary influence it had on the industry as a whole.
Toriyama’s death was major news earlier this year, affecting many who loved the series.
Here’s what Oda had to say once about Toriyama and his love for Dragon Ball:
“I bought the first volume of the Dragon Ball manga series when I was in elementary school, but I didn’t buy the second volume! I always read the chapters through WSJ magazine, and when the final volume 42 was released, I went to the bookstore and saw it, but I didn’t buy it! I thank you for giving me this opportunity to redraw it! And now, I wish I could buy this volume while Toriyama-sensei is still alive” — Eiichiro Oda
