For decades, each newCivilizationentry has carried forward essentially the same formula, but added its own handful of new features and tweaked an assortment of mechanics. While it isn’t breaking the wheel too much,Civilization 7is set to do a bit more than its predecessors in terms of shaking up the usual formula, with some big changes and new additions coming withthe long-awaited 2025 sequel.
Perhaps the biggest change inCivilization 7is how the game handles eras and leaders. Rather than choose one leader and nation for the entirety of a game like every entry before it,Civilization 7will have players picking a new leader and nation every era. Naturally, this implies thatCivilization 7is going to need a lot of leaders on day-one, and of the few who have already been confirmed, there’s one faceCivilization 6fans might already recognize.

Civilization Fans Have Seen Civ 7’s Amina Before
Amina’s Role in Civilization 6 Explained
Released in November 2022 as part of theCivilization 6Leader Pass, the Great Negotiators Pack added three new leaders to the 2016 strategy game. One of these new leaders was Queen Nzinga Mbande, who led the nation of Kongo. Nzinga Mbande already had a role inCiv 6as a Great General (named Ana Nzinga), so to replace her, Firaxis added Amina to the game, who would appear as a Great General if players had the Great Negotiators Pack enabled.
A Renaissance Era Great General,Civilization 6’s Aminaprovides a +5 to combat strength a +1 to movement for all Renaissance and Industrial Era land units. Alternatively, players can retire Amina to gain 1 Envoy, which can be used to gain favor with City-States. This makes Amina a useful Great General for players who are seeking a Diplomatic or Domination victory.

Amina Is a Fully-Fledged Leader in Civilization 7
Amina is set to appear once again inCivilization 7, and she’s been given quite the glow-up. No longer just a Great General with a generic icon and model, Amina will be a fully-fledgedleader inCivilization7, complete with her own character model and unique set of animations and voicelines. The leader of the Aksumite Civilization, Amina is categorized as a militaristic and economic-focused leader, and her ability supports that notion.
Born in 1533, Amina was a warrior-queen who ruled the kingdom of Zazzau, which is located in modern-day Nigeria. She used the burgeoning trade routes of the Sahara to gain easier access to her neighboring kingdoms, many of which she conquered during her reign.

Named “Warrior-Queen of Zazzau,“Amina’s leader abilityprovides +1 Gold for every Resource that’s assigned to her cities per Age. Amina also grants all of her units +5 combat strength when they’re on top of Plains or Desert tiles. When players go up against an AI Amina, they’ll want to try not to build their settlements atop Plains or Desert tiles, as having more settlements on those spots will decrease Amina’s relationship with the player.
Players will be able to choose Amina right at the start of the game, with Aksumite being an Antiquity Age nation. Playing as Amina will then allow players to choose the Songhai nation in the Exploration Age.
