Summary

In an interview,Final Fantasy 7 Rebirthgame director Naoki Hamaguchi asked players interested in picking up the upcoming PC port to not create or install any inappropriate mods into the game. However, Hamaguchi said thatFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthwill continue to respect the creativity of modders and their users, despite the company offering no official in-game mod support at launch.

The news came just under a week afterFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s PC port was revealed during the 2024 edition of The Game Awards. The January 23 release ofFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthon PC will happen just under a year after its initial launch on PS5 and will support features such as Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) and enhanced models and textures. Ergo,Final Fantasy 7 Rebirthhas some steep PC specification requirements, with Nvidia’s RTX graphics card lineup being the bare minimum that the game will support, along with 16GB of RAM and at least 155 GB of available storage space on a solid-state drive (SSD).

AlthoughFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthwill include PC-specific lighting featuresthat Hamaguchi stated his preference for, he also asked players looking to play on PC to refrain from one activity. Inan interview with Epic Games, Hamaguchi asked players not to share, create, or install any inappropriate or offensive mods inFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth. WhileFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthwill not have any official in-game support for mods at the time of writing, Hamaguchi said that he respects the creativity and dedication of theFinal Fantasymodding community and that the company will welcome any contributions that the company would deem appropriate. It is not clear what actions Square Enix could take, if any, against any modders who do not heed the developers' requests.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Director Asks Fans Not to Use Any Inappropriate Mods

The statement from Hamaguchi lined up with a different quote made by another Square Enix figurehead just months prior. Shortly ahead of the PC release ofFinal Fantasy 16in September 2024, Creative Studio 3 leaderNaoki Yoshida asked fans to not include any inappropriate or offensive mods. Like Hamaguchi after him, Yoshida left the door open for quality-of-life mods and features to be added toFinal Fantasy 16by interested fans.

Though no official mod support will be available, Square Enix affirmed its commitment to making sureFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthcan run optimally on the Steam Deck. Only time will tell how the PC version ofFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthwill be received by fans.
