About a year ago, Hideo Kojima made a surprise appearance at a PlayStation State of Play to announcePhysint, a brand-new tactical espionage game for PlayStation consoles. The renowned game designer revealed quite literally nothing aboutPhysint’s plot, setting, or gameplay, but he did confirm that it would be a spiritual successor to theMetal Gearseries, which he famously created. This news alone was enough to getKojimafans buzzing with excitement. A launch date or window forPhysintwas not announced, but it’s presumably going to be released after the other two projects that Kojima is working on,Death Stranding 2: On the BeachandOD.
Although gamers may have to wait until the next console generation to get their hands onPhysint, recent news suggests that its development may be further along than expected. Right before the end of 2024, Hideo Kojima took to Twitter to provide an update on the upcoming game. TheMetal Gearcreator revealed thatcasting forPhysinthad temporarily been pauseddue to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA video game voice actor strike, but he noted that he and his team were planning to resume production on the game later this year. While it’s unfortunate thatPhysintsuffered a setback, the fact that it is already in the casting phase suggests that Sony may have more to share about it soon.
Kojima May Share Some News About Physint’s Casting Soon
Like Many of Kojima’s Games, Physint Will Probably Have a Lot of Hollywood Talent Behind It
Kojima’s games have gained a reputation for having A-list actors and celebrities in them. His latest game,Death Stranding, starred Norman Reedus as its main protagonist and featured the likenesses of Guillermo Del Toro, Mads Mikkelsen, and Troy Baker, among others. Even Sophia Lillis, the actress best known for her role in theItduology, and Jordan Peele, the director behindGet OutandUs, are involved with the upcomingOD. Kojima does not try to hide his love of cinema, and the casting for most of his recent works is emblematic of that.
Physintwill likely have a lot of Hollywood talent behind it, too, considering the fact that an actual film company is taking part in its development. Indeed, Kojima confirmed last year that Colombia Pictures, a Sony Pictures subsidiary, would be working on the game in partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment. In what way the company will be involved is anyone’s guess, but Kojima’s claims aboutPhysintbeing both a game and a movieat the same time suggest that its role is far larger than some may expect.
PlayStation May Be Saving Some Major Physint Announcements for 2026
SincePhysintis about to resume casting later this year, the characters and plot for this game/movie hybrid may have already been written. If so, then maybe Sony will be ready to reveal them within the next 24 months. Right now, Kojima is focusing ongettingDeath Stranding 2out the door, so it’s unlikely he will have anything to share about his other projects in the immediate future. However, onceDS2is released on PS5 sometime this year, he may provide some more info aboutPhysintandOD, casting-related or otherwise.
During thePhysintannouncement video from 2024, Kojima made sure to note that 2026 was going to be the “40th anniversary of his game production career.” Perhaps that is going to be the year that Sony reveals more details about this tactical espionage game. Judging by howPhysintis being touted by Kojimaas the “culmination of [his] work,” it would make sense for him to save some announcements about the game for such a major anniversary in his life. Maybe Kojima will, at the very least, share a few details aboutPhysint’s cast by then.
Physint
Physint (working title) is an upcoming stealth video game developed by Kojima Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.Directed by Hideo Kojima, Physint is the third project between Kojima and Sony, and the second intellectual property to come out of the partnership after 2019’s Death Stranding. The game was described as an “action espionage” title, similarly to Kojima’s earlier work on the Metal Gear franchise. The project involves Columbia Pictures, division of SIE sister company Sony Pictures, in unknown capacity.
