NetEase may be adding some of its own personal flair to the time-honored game mode, or it might just be something much more traditional. While this would probably make the game mode much more balanced with minimal effort, it’s hard to see it as the best possible choice.
So much aboutMarvel Rivals’ character design is centered on movement. An Iron Man that can’t fly or a Spider-Man that can’t swing isn’t fulfilling their role in terms of gameplay, and they are failing to live up to the promise of living out the power fantasy of playing as those superheroes. Removing these abilities will just create a relatively bland game mode, and few players will want to actually grab the flag if it means they’re going to be actively nerfed for doing so.
NetEase clearly has an uphill battle balancing the mode, but the studio has done an excellent job with the title so far. Whether CTF launches in a near-perfect state or requires some work to make it an ideal fit remains to be seen, but players are still clearly having a blast with the game and its official modes regardless.
