“School Briefs” Offers a Look Into the Slice of Life Moments Between the Battles

While not exclusively written by Horikoshi, he did supervise the story and provide illustrations for theSchool Briefsseries of light novels. As the name suggests, this series follows the students of UA in their school life. If you are someone who loved the slice-of-life moments in classicMHAepisodes like Season 3’s “Moving into Dorms”, then this series will be a great read for you.

Some of the highlights of these light novels include:

MHAmoves at such a fast pace, so there are often times where it didn’t pause to breathe as much as it could or should have. If you are watchingMHAfor the first time, then you may be spoiled on some main story events if you read through all the “School Briefs” before watching. However, if you are doing a reread/watch ofMHA, it could be fun to pick up these light novels and read them alongside the timeline of the main story.

“You’ll get to read about the characters going about their everyday lives - something I haven’t been able to squeeze much of into the manga, as I’ve been too focused on moving the plot forward. I really want to add more content like this into the manga itself” -note from Kohei Horiksohi, MHA author, in"School Briefs" Volume 1.

My Heroine Academia

Some Spin-Offs Offer a More Humorous Look at Our Favorite Characters

“Smash” Puts Our Heroes in a Humorous New Light

While the previously mentioned spin-off and side stories offer an at least canon-parallel take on these characters, “My Hero Academia Smash!!” is much more okay with taking the characters on wild deviations from the main story. This means that characters will often appear with different personalities and motivations than in the original stories, appearing as caricatures of their main manga selves. This doesn’t mean that hardcore fans will not enjoy this manga, however, as seeing exaggerated takes on key story moments offers a humorous reprieve from the sometimes heavy story beats inMHA.

“My Heroine Academia” Focuses on the Girls of 1-A

This is a more esoteric spin off ofMHA, with chapters appearing in some volumes of the manga or alongside the main chapter releases in Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine. As the name suggests, it mostly focused on the heroines ofMHA, while still offering a humorous tone like “Smash!!”.

Alongside the students of class 1-a, we also got scenes from:

My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia

In My Hero Academia, Young Deku is born into a world where people commonly have something called quirks, also known as superpowers. He himself is born without any, but circumstances lead to that changing. He enrolls at the UA High School, a prestigious academy where the worlds future heroes learn how to use their powers.

Cast

In My Hero Academia, some humans have superpowers called quirks. Izuku Midoriya, nicknamed Deku, is not one of them. Deku has always idolized heroes like the number one hero, All Might, and since he was a child, he has always wanted to be a hero. However, his lack of a quirk has always held him back, but a chance encounter with All Might after discovering a classmate in danger sets Deku on the path to becoming a true hero. My Hero Academia centers around Deku and a class of heroes-in-training at UA. This school shapes young quirk users into future heroes through fake rescue missions, combat training, and other hero-tempering tasks. With young Deku inheriting the “One-For-All” quirk, he will learn what it means to be a true hero while facing off with dastardly supervillains.
