Mario & Luigi: Brothershipintroduces a new mechanic that doubles as an important step forward in characterization for the titular brothers. While theMario & Luigigames are full of personality as is, the latest game goes above and beyond in that department. In particular,Mario & Luigi: Brothershipprovides one of the biggest contrasts between the brothers to date. Not only that, it comes in the form of a mechanic that players will be interacting with throughout nearly the entire adventure. As a result, it has plenty of time to shine a spotlight on this new characterization.

Although theMario & Luigifranchise was nearly abandonedafter a long period with no installments,Brothershipbrought the series back in impressive fashion. The new game brings back both the gameplay and the charm that made the series such a success, while also adding its own spin in a few areas. For instance, Mario and Luigi are working together and pulling off combos in their basic attacks as well as their hard-hitting Bros moves. Combine that with the brothers being their lovable selves throughout, and the revival looks quite successful. HopefullyBrothershipwill lead to moreMario & Luigititles in the future.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership’s Luigi Logic Adds Another Layer to the Character Of Mario’s Loyal Brother

Luigi Logic is Luigi’s Secret Weapon in Mario & Luigi: Brothership

Throughout the game, one of thenew features inMario & Luigi: Brothershipthat players encounter is Luigi Logic. When prompted by shining lights around Luigi’s head, players can press a button, and he will follow through with an idea that he had. This ability can be used in the overworld for Luigi to perform some useful tasks, but it also comes through in boss battles, allowing Luigi to use his surroundings to give himself and Mario a major advantage. Notably, this is an ability that is completely unique to Luigi in-game; he and Mario have similar abilities otherwise.

Luigi’s More Intelligent, Creative Side Comes Through With Luigi Logic

Similar to how the gameplay ofMarioRPGs was influenced bySuper Mario RPG’s action commands, this trait could also inform Luigi’s future characterization. While Luigi has differed from Mario sinceSuper Mario Bros. 2,Brothershipreally lets him stand out in a new way. With Luigi Logic,Brothershipsets Luigi up as the more analytical of the two. While he is as capable as his brother in an adventure, he’s more of a strategist. This especially comes through in the game’s boss battles. Luigi’s plans are outside-the-box in comparison to the usual battle flow, but when executed well, they have devastating effects.

Luigi’s logical side could be seen as early asLuigi’s Mansion, where he had to solve several puzzles throughout the game.

Luigi Logic Makes Perfect Sense for His Character

Luigi Logic also ties in well with Luigi’s existing characterization. Despite starring in one ofNintendo’s darker first-party releases, Luigi is often shown as more nervous and unsure than Mario, and easily frightened to boot. His reveal as something of a planner inMario & Luigi: Brothershipcan shed some light onto this. While he is capable, he feels far more comfortable when he has a solid plan. This is shown by his confident “Leave it to me!” exclamation once he has an idea in battle. While Mario is always ready for any adventure, Luigi’s at his best when he has a strategy.

Luigi Logic gave the green plumber an extra dash of personality that hopefully won’t be forgotten. Following theend ofMario & Luigi: Brothership, players will hopefully see more of this aspect of Luigi in later games in the series. This analytical trait could even work its way into Luigi’s personality in the mainline games as well as other spin-offs. Luigi Logic made a splash as a new mechanic in several ways. Hopefully Luigi’s more logical side can become a perm
