Summary
APokemon GOplayer contacted the community at large to ask for help in bringing their Pokemon home from a Gym. ThePokemon GOplayer’s story shares similarities with many others who have chosen a Pokemon to defend a Gym, only to end up regretting it.
InPokemon GO, players can choose tofight atPokemon GOGymsin order to take it over for their team. Once all of the Pokemon at a Gym are defeated, the player can choose one of their own to become its first defender. However, players have lamented in the past that once a Pokemon is chosen, there’s no way to forcibly make it return home. Until a Pokemon is defeated, it’s stuck in its place, no matter how valuable or rare it might be.

This was the situation that itsalwayssunnyd found themselves in, after leaving a Pokemon to defend a Gym in Nebraska. Itsalwayssunnyd explained that they don’t live anywhere near there and had simply been visiting when they chose to have their Gyaradosdefend aPokemon GOGym. However, over a week later, the Gyarados was still stuck in the Gym, so its trainer reached out to the community, asking for anyone nearby to help them by defeating their Gyarados so it could come home.
Pokemon GO Player’s Gyarados Makes it Home Thanks to Kindness of Community
Pokemon can potentially get stuck guarding Gymsfor months or even years in some cases, so itsalwayssunnyd may not have had much hope in getting their Gyarados back when they made their post. However, a Reddit user named umeiri came through for them. Within hours of their post being made, umeiri simply responded that they had sent the player’s Pokemon home, and itsalwayssunnyd ecstatically responded, confirming the Gyarados made it back to them. It’s especially good news for itsalwayssunnyd, as they needed Gyarados to help them take down Giovanni’s Heatran.
As one might expect, thePokemon GOcommunity is overjoyed for itsalwayssunnyd and is also celebrating umeiri for their kindness. SincePokemon GOhas always encouraged players to go out and meet others and play together, it makes some sense that the community would be helpful to someone in a pinch like this. Many have lamented the lack of ability to recall a Pokemon from aPokemon GOGym, but Niantic doesn’t seem to be budging on it. It’s possible that the developer hasn’t added the option in order to prevent griefing or exploits. Players should keep in mind that there’s no guarantee as to when they’ll see aPokemon left to defend a Gymagain, but in the worst case scenario, one can try reaching out to the community for assistance like itsalwayssunnyd did.
