With the debut of shiny Rayquaza inPokemon Scarlet and Violet’sTera raids to close out the year, players instantlytook up the challenge to collect this perfect shiny Pokemon.Since a guaranteed shiny legendary is rare enough, having an actual event to celebrate and fight against such a foe only adds to the mystique of this dragon type. Even though Rayquaza’s raid isn’t the far scarier and far more tedious 7-star difficulty, 5-star is still more than enough of a task.

Since Rayquaza has the dragon Tera type, players need to be cautious of enhanced and powerful STAB dragon-type moves and pick Pokemon accordingly. There is truly no reason to bring dragon types against the shiny Rayquaza, as the double-damage taken isn’t worth the potential damage output. For players ready to take down the Sky High Pokemon, there are five fairy types to consider.

Azumarill Sleeping Cropped

5Azumarill

Time To Shine

A Pokemon that is typically the least popular option to see during an online Tera raid,Azumarill finally has a function within this promoted raid.Often misused in raids where Azumarill has no type advantage, its fairy dual type has a chance to shine against Rayquaza’s solid dragon typing. So long as players are careful when using Belly Drum, Azumarill can truly redeem itself from the usual nuisance it manifests as.

With the incredible ability of Huge Power, Azumarill’s attack stat is inately doubled, adding far more punch to Play Rough. Additionally, Azumarill has a decent HP stat, giving it a slight bulk for longevity. Even with all the bonuses Azumarill presents, players need to keep in mind that Tera raid boss Pokemon, such as Rayquaza, periodically turn abilities off, which instantly cuts Azumarill’s offense in half.

4Flutter Mane

Paradox Menace

The menace of the competitive scene, Flutter Mane is a devastatingly powerful fairy-type Pokemon that is just as good in the Tera raid side ofScarlet and Violet.Boasting incredible special attack, Flutter Mane is a strong choice for players with access to this prehistoric paradox.

3Tinkaton

A Simple Tank

Ranked as the most popular Pokemon introduced in Generation 9, beating out fan-favorites like Clodsire and Meowscarada, Tinkaton is one of the most popular fairy Pokemon, period. Thankfully, it’s power-level backs up this fame, making it a strong choice outside of simply being well-liked for personality and design.

Even though Tinkaton’s ability, Own Tempo, doesn’t boost stats or increase damage, being able to prevent confusion is a powerful asset when dealing with Rayquaza’s Hurricane. Beyond a convenient ability, Tinkaton only needs three moves to take down Rayquaza, and only two for players who are handy with the healing cheer. With access to Swords Dance and Play Rough, this hammer-wielding fairyis more than equipped to take down the shiny dragon, though the weakness to Earthquake is a considerable factor.

2Magearna

A Rare Choice

A Pokemon most players won’t have, the mythical Magearna is an effectively buffed Tinkaton, only on the special attack side as opposed to physical attack. Introduced and still readily available in Generation 7 via QR code, Magearna is a rarely picked choice for Tera raids, thanks to how few players can access it,but a strong choice, thanks to a signature move, great stats, and a fascinating ability.

Soul Heart, the signature ability of Magearna, grants it a special attack boost whenever a Pokemon faints, making it especially useful in a Tera raid environment. Beyond that, Fleur Cannon is an appropriately powerful fairy type move, establishing a great counter to Rayquaza in raids that are more of a marathon than a sprint.

1Sylveon

Pixie Power

Perhaps the most popular Eeveelution and one of the easier Pokemon to obtain to fight against Rayquaza,Sylveonis easily one of the strongest choices to take down the Hoenn legendary without much trouble. Beyond the need for specific breeding or an ability patch to get Sylveon’s hidden ability, Pixilate, this fan favorite simply sets itself up as the ultimate dragon slayer.

Thanks to Pixilate turning all normal-type moves into fairy type, Sylveon not only gets bonus STAB from a whole array of moves, but it also turns incredible powerful normal moves into something more. Hyper Beam goes from the standard, run-of-the-mill devastating laser into an absolutely obliterating force against all dragon types. While this does cause a one-turn cooldown to prevent spamming, the damage dealt with the addition of Calm Mind is incredible.
