RE7 and Village Strayed From Tradition
Unlike other games in the franchise,Resident Evil 7andVillageopted for a first-person perspective with its protagonist. This may not seem like a big deal at first, but these titles marked the first time in the mainline franchise that the protagonist couldn’t be seen in third-person. Newcomer Ethan Winters led the two aforementioned entries, which made the use of a first-person viewpoint make more sense, considering he was an unknown to the series. However, if recent leaks are to be trusted, thenResident Evil 9’s lead may be better suited for the classic third-person.
Other leaks have claimed thatResident Evil 9could feature an evolved race of Zombies that worship the moon.
Resident Evil Leaks Point to Familiar Faces
One of the biggestResident Evil 9leaksto make rounds on the internet is in regard to the protagonists. There has been an onslaught of intriguing leaks, but one of the most compelling is the claim that Leon and Jill will return. If this is the case, then a first-person perspective wouldn’t make much sense. Through the years, players have become incredibly attached to Leon and Jill, and not being able to see them during gameplay could prove to be wildly controversial. Since players didn’t have a previous connection to Ethan Winters, first-person was easier to accept, but giving the same treatment to Jill and Leon would potentially be a huge misstep.
The prospect ofanother dual protagonistResident Evilgameis exciting, but making it first-person would render that dynamic pointless. After the events ofVillageand itsShadows of RoseDLC, Ethan is seemingly dead, so the possibility of him coming back for the next installment is highly unlikely, unless there’s some massive twist on the horizon.
TheShadows of RoseDLC opts for third-person.Villageeventually added a third-person perspective for players, as well.
Resident Evil 9’s Timeline is Unclear
It’s now been three years sinceVillagewas released, and in that time, speculation has been piling up. While the Winters family saga has been compelling, and may even continue in future storylines, there is also a strong desire for fan-favorite protagonists to finally get the spotlight again. Chris Redfield is the only classic character who has been present for this specific saga, butResident Evil 9will hopefully change that.
Currently, it feels like noannouncement forResident Evil 9is in sight, but Capcom could always bring a surprise reveal forward. As questions and rumors continue to arise in the wake of an impending announcement, the character’s perspective will hopefully be at the forefront of the first reveals.
