Summary
An industry insider has claimed that Ubisoft is currently planning to release new Year 2 content updates forSkull and Bones, despite the incredibly low player count on some platforms. The long-awaited action-adventure game was finally released in February 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, but givenSkull and Bones' lackluster reception and Ubisoft’s turbulent year, many were expecting new content updates to come to an end after its first year.
While analysts arepredicting massive changes for Ubisoft in 2025, the studio has had somewhat of an unstable year. The lackluster response toStar Wars Outlaws, which was supposed to be one of the studio’s biggest titles for 2024, saw the company’s stock price take a 10% dip and come close to reaching a 10-year low for the studio. This also came after multiple layoffs throughout the year, but this is something that has been a common occurrence in the gaming industry throughout 2024, with massive studios such as Activision-Blizzard, Sony, Riot Games, and many more cutting jobs to remain financially viable.

Skull and Bones Reportedly Planning Year 2 Updates
Despite the incrediblylow user reviews forSkull and Bones, Ubisoft reportedly plans to continue supporting the title for a second year. According to anew reportfrom Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, sources who have knowledge of the studio’s plans say that a Year 2 Season 1 update will be released “early next year” and will feature new PvP modes, locations, world tiers, and more.Skull and Bones' most recent content update, known as Year 1 Season 4: Shadows of the Deep, was released on November 19 and added new world events, sea monsters, events, features, and more.
Skull and Bonesfinally came to Steam back in August, and despite its peak player count only reaching 2,615 players (viaSteamDB), Insider Gaming’s report claims that the anonymous source revealedSkull and Bones' player numbers “might surprise people,” which is why Ubisoft is reportedly remaining fully committed to delivering brand-new content for a second year. There’s no way to verify player numbers on other platforms, such as PlayStation and Xbox, butSkull and Bonesaverages around just 200 concurrent players on Steam.
The news ofSkull and Bonesreportedly receiving a second year of content updates will come as a surprise to many, largely due to the fact thatUbisoft recently announced it would be shutting downXDefiant, which many first-person shooter fans were expecting to go toe-to-toe with Activision’s powerhouse,Call of Duty. Servers for the title will remain operational until May 21, 2025, but new downloads and registrations are now unavailable. The free-to-play title was only released back in May but seemingly failed to garner enough attention to warrant further updates and support.
