For a while, there was rarely any news aboutScream 7.The wait for more updates gave fans time to come up withintense and sometimes unrealistic theories. Fans were curious about when the movie would start filming, but before that detail could be ironed out, more actors had to be added to the cast and the director had to be chosen. Excitement over the news thatChristopher Landon was directingScream 7disappeared when he announced in December 2023 that he was no longer going to get behind the camera of the sequel. In March 2024,Neve Campbell’s return as Sidney Prescottmade headlines, along with the great news thatKevin Williamson would directScream 7.
In his interview with The Direct, Delia also talked aboutthe various Ghostfaces in the franchise. He said, “Ghostface kind of fits into each iteration of ‘Scream’ differently, and so you’re just looking for however the casting can elevate or subvert the audience’s expectations of who that might be.”
Many hopeScream 7willincludeeverything that fans know and love about the franchise, from silly moments to wise quotes and reflections on the horror genre. The fact that Williamson, who wrote severalScreammovies, is directing is a step in the right nostalgic and familiar direction.
In 2016, when it had been 20 years sinceScreamwas released, Williamson and Campbell talked about how much people enjoy the slasher franchise in an interview withEntertainment Tonight. Williamson said:
“Horror movies at the time were going straight to video. I just remember it took on a life of its own. Word of mouth is what madeScream.”
It’s amazing to reflect on the longevity of the franchise and the fact that six greatScreammovies were released between 1996 and 2023. There could even be aScream 8, Scream 9, andScream 10, depending on the audience response and box office numbers for the next movie. AlthoughScream 7may start filming shortly, the seventh movie in the overwhelmingly popular franchise will bereleased on February 27th, 2026. When compared to the last two movies, that is quite a long wait.Scream (2022)was released in January 2022andScream 6was released just over one year later in March 2023.However, there is plenty of time to think aboutwhat Gale Weathers’s (Courteney Cox) arc should beand, of course, the most important question of all: who is the new Ghostface?
