Summary

Shadow of the Colossuscreator Fumito Ueda gave fans a brand-new first look at a new sci-fi title at The Game Awards 2024. The currently-untitled game has a similar isolated vibe to Ueda’s past work inShadow of the Colossus.

Fumito Ueda is a legendary game director and designer, having worked at Team Ico and as a part of Sony’s Japan Studio for many years. As a part of Team Ico, Ueda led the development ofIcoandShadow of the Colossus, both critically acclaimed andbeloved titles of the PlayStation 2 library. While Ueda would leave in 2011, he remained on contract to finish work onThe Last Guardian, a game that was highly-anticipated at the time. FollowingThe Last Guardian’s release in 2016, GenDesign confirmed it was working on a brand-new title, though with various cryptic teasers that didn’t give much away in terms of the plot or what to expect. Fans finally got a first look at GenDesign’s newest title at The Game Awards 2024.

According to Geoff Keighly before the reveal, the trailer shown off at the show is all gameplay. It starts with a person dressed in a cloak and mask running through a gray world, hearing a 60-second countdown timer. They urgently rush to a nearby mechanized platform, springing up quite high. Part ofShadow of the Colossus’climbing influencecan be seen in the gameplay, where the unnamed player character is seen scaling what appears to be a giant mecha.

GenDesign’s Next Untitled Game Features Mechas and Climbing

As the countdown finishes, the player character enters the mecha to protect themselves from the oncoming shockwave, the robot’s head being activated before they are hit. As the area around them fades to white, the mecha head is blown away. GenDesign’s new game definitely appears to be inspired by its past, though it’s too early to tell if it will beall that similar toShadow of the Colossus.

WhileThe Last Guardianreceived generally favorable reviews back in 2016, it also suffered several delays during its development. Thankfully,GenDesign’s next gamedoesn’t appear to have any setbacks or development hell to speak of at this time, though no release date or title for the game has been set yet. Regardless, many fans are curious about GenDesign’s newest game, especially after the amount of time that the studio has teased fans about it.
