Sonic the Hedgehog 3writers did a great job on the recent film and the franchise just received a greenlight for a fourth movie. Aside fromSonic 4, the scriptwriters are eyeing making a movie adaptation of a game from one of the popular franchises -The Legend of Zelda.
The Legend of Zeldais set in the fictional kingdom of Hyrule, and it follows the adventures of a hero named Link, who embarks on a mission to rescue Princess Zelda. It is a hit among players because its themes include courage, wisdom, and power, which are easy to relate to. Apparently, the writers ofSonic the Hedgehog3love the franchise too and there’s a particular game in the series that they want to make a film.
Pat Casey and Josh Miller, the duo who pennedSonic the Hedgehog 3, spoke with IGN days before the release ofSonic 3. During the interview, the pair talked about their dream video game adaptations. Initially, Miller mentionedA Boy and His Blob, while Casey said, “the 7-Up game about the dot having a platforming adventure,” referring toCool Spot, a 1993 platform game featuring Spot, a red-orange dot introduced as 7-Up’s mascot in 1987. Spot can jump and attack by throwing soda bubbles. However, Miller gave another exciting response,
I think another easy one I think we can answer because the movie’s already happening and we’re already not doing it would be a Zelda
According to Miller, they playedThe Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and they loved it. So, he suggested making a film from it and teased they could do a spinoff sinceThe Legend of Zeldamovie is already in development. “I remember always when we played Wind Waker, we were always like, man, I mean, it would probably be weird if they made a Zelda movie to start with Wind Waker versus the more classic Hyrule. But we both loved Wind Waker and it’s so cinematic. Yeah. So after they make this Zelda movie, I guess we’re putting it out there in the world, maybe we can do a Wind Waker spinoff,” Miller added.
In 2023, Nintendo confirmed thatThe Legend of Zeldawas getting a movie adaptation. TheMaze Runnerdirector Wes Ball is attached to the project to direct it and Derek Connolly, the co-writer ofKong: Skull Island, Detective Pikachu, Monster TrucksandJurassic World, will work on the script.
Miller made the right choice by namingWind Wakerbecause the game is set on a group of islands with a whimsical look and vibrant environment. The setting would make a beautiful live-action and CGI hybrid for a stunning movie. The bright colors, expressive characters, and imaginative settings will surely captivate audiences of all ages. In addition to the vibrant setting, it’s a coming-of-age story with emotional storytelling as Link goes on a mission to save his sister fromGanondorf. The movie is expected to feature sea adventures and explore themes of discovery and freedom. TheWind Wakerreceived numerous recognitions for its visuals, music, story and gameplay and the same elements can be translated into cinematic, so Miller wanting to write a movie about it makes sense.
