Summary

Peter Parker’s two very different lives are always at odds. It’s a classic Spider-Man storyline, repeated in various different ways in countless stories. However, it seems theMCUcould be taking a different tack forSpider-Man 4.

Not much is known about the plot ofSpider-Man 4. However, the internet is, of course, rife with rumors. There is even some speculation thatGwen Stacy could finally make her MCU debut, due to the film’s current working title:Blue Oasis. Some think it’s a reference to the well-knownSpider-Man: Bluecomic run. There has also been a lot of chatter that the mulitverse isn’t quite done messing with Peter Parker’s life. How credible these rumors are remains to be seen– although it’s worth noting that Tom Holland himself has said he’s very open to bringing Miles Morales into live action– but many fans are hoping that the next film remains more ‘street-level’ and focuses on Peter being more of the ‘friendly neighborhood Spider-Man’ he was inSpider-Man: Homecoming. It would also be interesting to see the connections between theVenommovies and Holland’s finally come to fruition.

In a chat with Deadline’s Behind the Lens, Amy Pascal gave a rare update on the next installment of Holland’s Spider-Man franchise this week. The producer explained that the film revolves around Holland’s iteration of everyone’s favorite wall-crawler deciding to “focus on being Spider-Man, because being Peter Parker is too hard”. For once, Peter’s dual identities won’t be at odds with each other, because it seems he’s completely shut off one side of himself. This is something fans who read theSpider-Man: No Way Homescriptpicked up on right awayfrom the final line: “Soars over the Rockefeller Christmas tree with a newfound sense of freedom. Liberated from having to juggle two lives. Peter Parker is no more, but Spider-Man lives on…”

Peter famously quit being Spider-Man to focus on his personal life in the comics. This has happened more than once throughout the character’s history– for various different reasons– but the most well-known instance is theSpider-Man No More!storyline, which provided inspiration for Sam Raimi’sSpider-Man 2(and was even directly referenced by one of the film’s most famous shots). It’s interesting that, at this point in the MCU, he’s doing the exact opposite and giving up his fraught personal life in favor of all the responsibilities that come with being Spider-Man instead. This reversal of such a common trope for the character is highly uncommon, and should make fans more curious about where they’re intending to take the story. It promises to be an intriguing spin on a story we know really well.

In the interview, Pascal also praised Zendaya– who plays a version of iconic Spider-Man love interest MJ Watson in the MCU– for her audition forSpider-Man: Homecomingand voiced her excitment about working withdirector Destin Daniel Cretton. Cretton previously directedShort Term 12–which stars another MCU cast member: Brie Larson– and Marvel’sShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The director has already shown he has the chops to pull off both grounded, human stories and blockbuster spectacles with his previous projects, so hopefully his take on Spider-Man blends those things nicely.

Other major plot details are being held close to Sony and Marvel’s vests, but development is well under way.Spider-Man 4is currently set to start filming next summer, and Holland reportedly has more input this time around. Although Zendaya’s involvement hasn’t been officially confirmed, it’s almost a guarantee as both she and Holland have read the script for the upcoming film. The duo is also set to star inChristopher Nolan’s next film, which ironically is releasing the week beforeSpider-Man 4. So fans can probably expect double the amount of adorable press tour moments.
