Summary
Squid GameSeason 2 is only a few weeks away. However, fans are already talking about the new mysterious character introduced in the new season.
Squid Gamewas a massive hit when Netflix dropped the first season in September 2023. Due to the positive reception, the streaming giant renewed the South Korean survival thriller horror series for two more seasons.Squid GameSeason 2’s trailerand promotional materials have been released. One new character caught fans' attention for some reason because their costume was different from the others, so it was hard to conclude their actual role in the series.
One of the featured characters in the anticipatedSquid GameSeason 2is No Eul, portrayed by actress Park Gyu Young, who previously appeared inA Good Day to Be a Dog(2023-2024),Sweet Home(2020-2024),Celebrity(2023),It’s Okay to Not Be Okay(2020) andThe Third Charm(2018) to name a few. In the “Meet the Cast” video, Young introduced her character as a former soldier from North Korea. She has a baby but left the child in their home country and her only desire is for them to reunite. However, she raised eyebrows because fans noticed that she wasn’t wearing the usual green jumpsuit worn by players, suggesting that she was not among them. In the trailer, she wasn’t wearing the uniform either, including in the stills released for the show. Since her character is seemingly not a player, fans began speculating that she could be one of the guards – those who wear red jumpsuits with masks featuring distinct shapes (circle, triangle, and square), perKoreaboo. The guards play a significant role in maintaining order during the deadly tournament. However, they remain anonymous and their identities are concealed. In the first season, nothing much is known about the guards, so if Young’s character is a guard, then this will be a great way to introduce the audience to a story about the individuals behind those red jumpsuits and black masks.
However, there are also speculations that Young’s character, No Eul, could be an ally to Wi Ha-joon’s Police Detective Hwang Jun-ho. The officer infiltrated the game in search of his missing brother, who turned out to be the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun). The two brothers had a confrontation inSquid GameSeason 1 episode 8, “Front Man,” which ended up with the Front Man shooting Hwang, who fell from a cliff. Both characters will return in the second season, confirming that the police detective survived the fall. With Hwang surely returning to confront his big brother how he got himself into such a fatal game, it would make sense if he has a partner who knows the whereabouts of the Front Man or the mechanics of the game.
It remains unclear who No Eul really is, but since she is visible in Netflix’s promotional materials, she likely plays a vital role in the series. At the moment, it’s hard to tell what her role in the show is for sure. However, it’s likely that she’s among the guards because she’s not among the players. Also, this made sense because it would give the audience a good grasp of the lives of the individuals wearing the circle, square, and triangle masks. Well, it won’t be long and fans will soon unveil the mystery behind No Eul’s character. Aside from Young, T.O.P, whose real name is Choi Seun Hyun, joinsSquid GameSeason 2 as among the participants. However, fans noticed thathe was visibly missing in the newly released promotional materialsand official list of cast members and special guests.
