Of the titles that were released in 2024, Suda 51 says thatEchoes of Wisdomis his game of the year.
In a recent interview withGamesRadar, Suda 51 discusses his past and present works, such as his original collaboration with Shinji Mikami to makeShadows of the Damnedback in 2011. One of the topics that came up was the games that Suda had been playing lately. Joking that he doesn’t think that the game needs a shout-out from him, Suda says that the game he played and dug into the most was Nintendo’sZelda: Echoes of Wisdom.
Suda said he felt thatEchoes of Wisdomwas significantly different from otherZeldagames, mainly because of its cartoonish art style, but also how it called back to the older titles in the franchise. He specifically notes that the world itself was what got him hooked, and he loved all the small details within. “I doubt anyone needs me to recommend this title to them, but… Anyway, I felt it was significantly different from a lot of the other biggerZeldatitles, a bit more cartoonish and closer to the older games in the series, but once you get into it, it really hooks you in. I really loved the world it was set in and all the various details, and again, it just left me feeling like ‘I got to experienceZeldaall over again,'” said Suda.
Echoes of Wisdomin particular bucked the trend by not giving Zelda Link’s sword-fighting style as her primary means of attack. Instead, Zelda uses the Tri-Rod to summon echoes of objects or enemies that she’s scanned to help solve puzzles and fight foes. TheZeldafranchise has some big shoes to fill in 2025, but with rumors ofWind Waker HDandTwilight Princess HDports on the Switch 2, there’s a lot to look forward to.
