Summary

The hit strategy remakeAge Of Mythology Retoldhas brought players back who loved the originalAge Of Empiresspin-off game. However, players who are new to this world of mythical creatures and different Gods to worship, or players returning after a long time away, will need to get to grips with the many different unit choices available to them.

More important than which units are the strongest is which units should be put together into armies. Players might have strong units that don’t work well together and quickly find themselves at a complete loss in battle. Strategygames likeAge Of Mythology Retoldrequire a full thought process, and although any combination can be somewhat countered, different unit pairings will work better than others.

Spearmen & Slingers In Age Of Mythology Retold

8Spearmen/Slinger

The Basic Egyptian Army

There are many different simple combinations of units inAge Of Mythology Retold, but one that makes an awful lot of sense in general strategy is bringing together a group of infantry units and a group of archer units.Spearmen & Slingerscan both be trained in the Egyptian Barracks, which makes them the basic early game army for Egyptian players.

Though there are many complicated strategies available toAge Of Mythology Retoldplayers, these simple armies are always going to be popular because of their simplicity and success at combating most enemy forces. These cheap units are easily replaced, and are both counter units, making them strong against enemy forces of infantry and archers, and they can be upgraded a great deal to keep them competitive as the game goes on.

Hoplites & Toxotes In Age Of Mythology Retold

7Hoplite/Toxotes

The Standard Greek Force

Another basic army combination featuring infantry and archery is theGreek Hoplite and Toxotesduo. These units can both be trained, from separate specific buildings, early in the game. The standard for defense, as well as early attacks, and the lack ofchoice for later game units on the Greek side, makes these great units to combine throughout.

Hoplites are generally considered strong infantry units, and they are effective at protecting Toxotes, who have bonuses when fighting infantry. This means these units combined will sweep any melee soldiers, since Hoplites have advantages against cavalry, leading them to an easy victory against human armies from most other civilizations.

Murmillo & Arcus In Age Of Mythology Retold

6Murmillo/Arcus

Atlantean Early Game Might

Though the Atlantean civilization doesn’t have quite the same early game strategy, the appearance of theArcusunit in the Heroic Age means that players will be able to create a fairly standard approximation of the infantry/cavalry blend that other civilizations can create almost off the bat.

The Arcus is a strong archer unit, while theMurmillois decent as infantry and exceedingly cheap. What gives these units an advantage is that, besides the regular upgrades both receive as the game goes on, they can also be turned into heroes for additional charges. With the right saving of resources, this makes it possible to create an army of heroes that will devastate any mythical units.

Hersir & Throwing Axemen In Age Of Mythology Retold

5Hersir/Throwing Axemen

The Norse Infantry Double

The Norse civilization is somewhat differentfrom the others inAge Of Mythology Retoldbecause of the lack of archer units available to them. Fortunately, they have some ranged units that aren’t archers, such as theThrowing Axemen. Despite being an infantry unit, these soldiers work with ranged attacks. This means that, when doubled with the powerful infantry hero units calledHersir, this army has bonuses against some of the strongest units in the game, including myth units, and since they’re both infantry, they aren’t weak against many types of units.

Hersir have a huge advantage over hero units and are relatively cheap for heroes themselves. The Norse need to make use of them, particularly since they can generate Favor by fighting and randomly spawn myth units as they do so. The Norse civilization is an unusual one to get to grips with, but players will find it well worth combining these units. Hersir are even more vital later in the game when powerful myth units will be counted on by enemies.

Fanatics & Cheiroballista In Age Of Mythology Retold

4Fanatic/Cheiroballista

The Atlantean Army Game Enders

The Atlantean civilization is a complex oneto build a standard army with. They are great at counter units, which is useful but difficult to manage and very dependent on who the player is against. However, a strong late-game option for fighting any army is theFanatic and Cheiroballistacombination. Fanatics are very strong infantry units with bonuses against all human soldiers, making the upgraded hero versions devastating against almost anything.

The big weakness of Fanatics is that they are slow-moving. This can be countered by pairing them with the Cheiroballista, which are siege weapons that are extremely strong against anything besides buildings and cavalry. They will stop archers from posing a problem to this slow-moving force, while upgraded Fanatics will handle anything else. Cheiroballista are especially good against infantry, making it impossible for any force to stand toe to toe with the Fanatics.

Myrmidon & Medusa In Age Of Mythology Retold

3Myrmidon/Medusa

The Devastating Path Of Zeus

Late-game Greek civilization players have a lot of powerful combinations of units available to them. However, few are as monstrous to try and deal with as these units combined.Myrmidonis the special unit availableonly to Zeus players late in the game, an infantry unit that has bonuses against Egyptian and Norse human units. This is a massive win against many enemies in multiplayer, and it can be improved upon by following Hera.

Following Zeus as a major God means players have the option to follow Hera in the Mythic Age,which gives them access to theMedusa. Not only a powerful myth unit with a ranged attack, the Medusa also has a special ability that allows it to instantly kill any enemy unit, even myth units, which makes it one of the most devastating units in the game. Even without knowing what the player is up against, Myrmidon defending several Medusas is a combination that is likely to win most battles, even late-game.

Jarl & Hersir In Age Of Mythology Retold

2Jarl/Hersir

Strange But Deadly Combo

The Norse civilization has many unusual quirks, but players who get a handle on the various units will find some great choices. TheJarlis a fast-paced cavalry unit that is good against most types of units, having advantages against human soldiers. This means it isn’t susceptible to much, but having allies is always useful, andHersir, despite being slower, are hero units with an advantage against mythical units.

Jarl units are only vulnerable to non-human attacks like myth units. Being backed up by Hersir means they are very difficult to bring down. Jarl also helps counter the huge weakness of the Norse to archers by being fast enough to negate most archer volleys. Overall, Jarl units are a huge piece in the Norse arsenal, and adding some Hersir units makes them nigh on unstoppable.

Camel Riders & Chariot Archers In Age Of Mythology Retold

1Camel Rider/Chariot Archers

The Egyptian Late-Game Speed Machine

The Migdol Stronghold is beloved by Egyptian civilization players because it gives access to War Elephants. However, these units are slow-moving, expensive, and difficult to train. The Migdol Stronghold also comes withCamel Riders and Chariot Archers, both of which are relatively cheap and come with a lot of speed. Upgraded late in the game and combined, enemies will be absolutely run over by this key pairing.

Camel Riders are strong against both other cavalry and archer units, a huge boost only made better by the fact that Chariot Archers have bonuses against infantry. This is a complete set and makes for a combination of units that will run over any human army at least. There aren’t many perfect combinations inAge Of Mythology Retold, but this pairing is a match made in heaven that can give Egyptian players a huge advantage late in the game.
