Summary
Monsters stalk their way through every form of media, appearing as inhuman creatures with a penchant for wanton violence and destruction. Ordinary people are nothing more than meaningless victims to these cratures to satiate a hunger for blood, flesh, or murder, but it’s the extraordinary people who come to the rescue.
To counteract the rabid and dangerous machinations of monsters, there are monster hunters who have the resources and abilities to hunt them down. There are even those hunters who might even be slightly supernatural themselves, as it might take a monster to kill a monster. Human or not, these hunters are humanity’s only hope against the dark creatures that haunt shadows and delight in their own evils.

6Grimm
A Detective Must Protect And Serve Against Inhuman Dangers
Based on theBrothers Grimm Fairy Tales,Grimmoffers a new and modern take on these classic stories of yore. The main character, Nick Burkhardt, is a homicide detective in Portland, whose otherwise ordinary job involves taking on dangerous creatures from mythology known as Wesen. Descended from a line of hunters known as the Grimms, his solemn duty is to protect the innocent against evil.
Throughout the show, Nick faces off against increasingly dire threats with the help of his partner, Hank Griffin, and a friendly Wesen by the name of Monroe, who has no interest in helping his monstrous brethren. Having a detective as the main character adds a noir element to the series, and offers a completely different take on classic fairy tales. Fans of mystery and fantasy are in for a treat withGrimm.
Doctor Who / Whoniverse
Since its inception in 1963, the BBC’sDoctor Whohas enjoyed success with over 20 seasons, featuring the titular Doctor as he tours across time and space thanks to the dimension-warping vehicle known as the TARDIS, and sometimes accompanied by a companion. Traveling to these locations results in the Doctor and his companion encountering new and oftenterrifying threatswith nefarious goals that must be stopped.
From the lifelong nemesis Daleks to the horrifying Weeping Angels, there is a new monster almost every week to contend with. The Doctor is not a typical monster hunter, showing ingenuity more than mere muscle strength or supernatural abilities, armed only with their trusty Sonic Screwdriver. This puts a different and interesting spin on the typical formula of monster-hunting shows.
There might be no monster hunter show quite as prolific asSupernatural, one of the longest-running showsthat saw its conclusion in 2020 after 15 seasons spread across 15 years. The bond between the two brothers and exciting demonic showdowns earned the series much acclaim and thousands upon thousands of loyal fans who watched it right through to its tearful ending.
Two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, find themselves thrown into the world of monster hunting, having been trained by their father, John, from a young age. Armed with demon-killing paraphernalia and a ‘67 Chevy Impala, the duo drive across America tracking down various supernatural threats, defying death, and even overpowering Lucifer himself. The longevity of the show and spiraling plotlines that verged on the nonsensical lost some fans along the way, but there is no denying the cultural impact this show had.

Episode after episode, Merlin, Arthur, and the kingdom will be challenged by a new and dangerous threat, mostly creatures conjured or created by magic-wielding evil sorcerers who wish to undo the Pendragon line for one reason or another. The most famous antagonist is the legendary Morgana, who acts as Merlin and Camelot’s biggest threat. Creating a fantasy monster hunter story results in a unique monster-hunting show that is suitable for the whole family.
2Angel
A Demon-Hunting Vampire
Angel was one of the core characters ofBuffy the Vampire Slayer, a vampire cursed to lose his soul and devolve into his evil alter-ego Angelus whenever he experienced a moment of true happiness as recompense for his diabolical deeds. He departedBuffyat the end of season 3, seeking his redemption in the dark, demon-infested city of Los Angeles. It is here he founded Angel Investigations to help those facing supernatural threats big and small.
Fashioned asa monster-of-the-week show, fans ofBuffywill be happy to see more monster ass-kicking featuring familiar faces such as Wesley, Cordelia, Spike, Darla, and Willow, with the former two as members of the core group inBuffy.Angelunfortunately met a premature end leaving unanswered questions and an unresolved fight for survival, but it still remains an enjoyable show with a darker overtone that monster-hunting fans are sure to love.
Inspired by a movie of the same name,Buffy the Vampire Slayerexplores a world filled with a cornucopia of hellish creatures and demons, with only one woman, known as the Slayer, capable of stopping them. The otherwise ordinary 16-year-old Buffy Summers is called into action as the Chosen One, Sunnydale’s only hope against the creatures that crawl out of the Hellmouth to inflict merry hell on the unsuspecting denizens.
Demons, vampires, and a variety of other monsters appear each week, resulting inthe “Scooby Gang"pooling together their research and knowledge to figure out what they are hunting and how exactly to stop it. Beyond all the cool kick-assery from Buffy, there are moments of humor, as well as truly heart-wrenching tragedy that results in a more human slayer who the viewers truly feel for and relate to. Even the coolest, baddest hunters in the world still suffer moments of vulnerability. As far as monster-of-the-week shows go, none do it so well asBuffy the Vampire Slayer.
