Summary

GreedFall 2: The Dying Worldhas now been out for several months, and while it hasn’t performed as well as Spiders likely hoped it would, it is only in early access and therefore still has a long road ahead of it. Regardless of any issues it may currently have,GreedFall 2has taken some strides to be different from its predecessor in an attempt to welcome in a new audience and appease those who might have wished for some changes in the first game.

As a prequel,GreedFall 2is automatically a standalone game that can be understood by anyone but will still likely benefit from the experiences of players who spent time with the first game. However,GreedFall 2also already features some major differences in its gameplay from the firstGreedFall, making it even more of an altogether different experience, though there are likely still many more changes to come, as the game is currently only in early access.

GreedFall 2: The Dying World’s Biggest Differences So Far From GreedFall

GreedFall 2’s Setting Is the Opposite of GreedFall’s

The most apparent difference betweenGreedFall 2: The Dying Worldand its predecessor is its setting. In fact,GreedFall 2’s setting essentially mirrorsGreedFall’s. WhereasGreedFallsaw its protagonist traveling from theOld Continent of Gacaneto Teer Fradee,GreedFall 2takes players from Teer Fradee to the Old Continent of Gacane. This is due toGreedFall 2’s protagonist, a Teer Fradee native from the Shining Scales Clan, being taken from their home and then forced to navigate an unfamiliar and hostile world.

Since players control aTeer Fradee native inGreedFall 2, that also means the native language of the island, Yecht Fradi, is quite a bit more prevalent in the sequel than it was in the first game. As such, players are required to read subtitles more often inGreedFall 2than they had to in the firstGreedFall, though the natives of Teer Fradee speak slowly enough that each translated line is fairly easy to follow. Finally,GreedFall 2’s change in setting effectively provides players with a deeper understanding of the impact of colonization on Teer Fradee and its indigenous citizens, thereby adding a layer of depth to the sequel that the first game was unable to achieve.

GreedFall 2’s Combat System Has Been Overhauled From the First Game

Apart fromGreedFall 2’s setting, its combat system is significantly different from the first game, though not necessarily for the better. WhileGreedFall’s combat system is action-oriented with an emphasis on real-time attacks and dodges,GreedFall 2’s combat system is much more tactical, resembling those of classicRPGs likeDragon Age: OriginsandStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. WithGreedFall 2’s new combat system, players can pause the game mid-combat to issue commands to their character and companions, which should, theoretically, offer a strategic edge in combat.

Unfortunately,GreedFall 2’s new combat system is one of its current most criticized features, as it has been noted to feel like a big step backwards in its pacing compared to the first game’s combat, but Spiders has confirmed that the system needs work.

GreedFall 2 Introduces Several Other Significant Changes as Well

GreedFall 2also employs several other significant changes to the first game’s formula that ultimately change the way it is played. Firstly,GreedFall 2’s explorable areas feel a bit more open than they did in the first game, with the firstGreedFallhaving more of a claustrophobic feel andGreedFall 2allowing players to see more of the game’s landscape beyond their immediate surroundings. Secondly, players can now travel with threecompanions inGreedFall 2instead of two, potentially allowing for more strategic encounters with enemies. Finally,GreedFall 2has added a Concentration Mode, which not only applies to the tactical pause function during combat but also allows players to better distinguish collectibles as they explore the game’s world.

Since it is currently inearly access,GreedFall 2is expected to change even more during this stage of its development. As those who play the game continue supplying Spiders with the feedback necessary to seeGreedFall 2become the best version of itself, it’s likely the list of differences between it and its predecessor will lengthen over time.
