Kaiu Shirai’s Other Projects

Kaiu Shirai released his first standalone project called The Location of Ashley-Gat in 2015. It was followed by another standalone piece called Poppy’s Wish. For this collaboration, he worked with Posuka Demizu. After this project, Kaiu Shirai started working on his draft called Neverland, which wouldlater become The Promised Neverland. The manga started serializing in Weekly Shonen Jump in August 2016, and it continued till June 2020.

When Kaiu Shirai went to the editorial department of the Weekly Shonen Jump, they told him that it did not feel like a Jump manga. Eventually, he received the green light, but the editorial department asked him to wrap things up in 12 volumes or fewer. However, the challenges were far from over for the author. He needed to find an artist who could capture the manga’s essence. After being rejected by multiple artists, Kaiu Shirai teamed up with Posuka Demizu.

The Success Of The Promised Neverland

The manga was a major hit, and it sold over 42 million copies, making it one of the best-selling manga of all time. The Promised Neverland was also nominated for several awards, and it ended up winning quite a few. Due to its insane success,The Promised Neverland was picked up for an anime adaptationin 2018. Ultimately, the anime was released in January 2019. It aired for 12 episodes before reaching its conclusion in March 2019.

The Promised Neverland’s second season was announced in 2019. Originally, it was supposed to be released in 2020, but it had to be delayed because of the pandemic. However, this particular season received a great degree of backlash fromfans as it skipped over multiple arcs and characters.

Aside from the anime, there has been a live-action movie and a live-action series. The Promised Neverland also released an artbook in November 2024.
