8Is The Law Of Surprise Still Working For Ciri And Geralt?

An Ancient And Powerful Magic That Binds The Fate Of Two People

The Law Of Surprise is one of the greatest narrative lines inThe Witcheruniverse. This powerful spell starts when a grateful (often rich and powerful) person says: “Thank you, is there anything I can give you in return?” Their savior demands “Give me that what you didn’t expect to find when you returned to your home,” or something along those lines. It could be the dog jumping in joy waiting for his owner, or a debt collector bringing a bag of gold that he took “by mistake.” The law of surprise is a marvelous thing that can bind two people for life, or break them apart.

It is said that the reason why neither Geralt nor Ciri die throughout their adventures, is because they’redestined to live happily togetheras father and child. One has the father that she always needed, but was never there for her. The other has in her the family that was denied to him by the cruelty of the experiments he was subjected to. That’s more or less how this powerful binding magic moves the plot. But it is also possible that inThe Witcher 4,the law of surprise keeps operating somehow, pushing Ciri to move Earth and Sky in search for something. Is Geralt missing? Or is it something else?

7Was A Mysterious Mage Behind Nilfgaard’s Invasion?

The Mastermind Might Be A Former Foe Who Managed To Survive

Sorcerers and mages are mysteriousand scheming beings in the world ofThe Witcher. They have always been involved in some of the most important events of the plot. But there were several mage factions, like the Lodge of Sorceresses that led the charge into the new age of the Northern Realms. Is it possible that other mages, besides the Nilfgaardian ones, were behind some of the heinous acts that led to the war between the Northern Realms and The Empire?

ThroughoutThe Witcherseries, it’s implied that some traitor mages facilitated the invasion of the Nilfgaardian forces to Cintra. This is also true in the book series, but the games also have pointed out a possible collaboration between the mages and The Wild Hunt chasing after Ciri. The mastermind behind Cintra’s fall, Vilgefortz of Rogeveen, was killed by Geralt and his friends. But there’s a chance some of his associates (or maybe he himself) have survived and could come back as a villain inThe Witcher 4.

The Black Sun Renfri Card Gwent The Witcher

6The Mysteries Behind the Black Sun Prophecy

The Greatest Conspiracy Could Play A Key Role

Prior tothe events ofThe Witchergame series, an unknown group of mages orchestrated a world-scale conspiracy to enforce eugenics and facilitate the search for a powerful Source. This event rippled through time and ended with the birth of Cirilla of Cintra, daughter of Paveta and Dunny (Emhyr), one of the children “cursed” by The Black Sun.

It was never revealed how or when the mages began their vicious experiment, but the aftereffects have taken the lives of countless members of the Northern Realm royalty, most of them from elven lineages. Perhaps inThe Witcher 4, CD Projekt Red could finally shed some light and reveal a culprit.

Emperor Emhyr bribing a Magistrate of the Empire of Nilfgaard

5Did Emhyr Survive The Events After The Witcher 3?

His Fate Was Not Set In Stone

It is implied in one ofThe Witcher 3endings that Emhyr Var Emrheis, The White Flame that dances over the graves of his enemies, didn’t survive a coup d’état orchestrated by the former Emperor’s loyalists. However, it is possible that this isn’t what actually happened, even if Cirilla didn’t fulfill her role as the rightful heir of the Empire.

Emhyr Var Emhreis is crafty and resourceful. Before becoming Emperor, he was able to escape captivity three times and marry one of the daughters of the Northern Realms royalty. And though this was mere manipulation by people interested in seeing the results of their cross-breeding (Ciri), it was proof of Emhyr’s iron-willed nature. It is possible that he is still alive and kicking.

The Witcher 3’s Cat School Aberration Experiment

4Are Any Of The Other Witcher Schools Still Active?

Witcher schools are a delicate topic among fans ofThe Witcherseries, and they’re mentioned by Sapkowski in the books and in the games. Geralt even meets and fights a Witcher of the Cat school duringSeason of Storms. In the games, these are constantly mentioned in the lore and some of them appear as antagonists or allies.

Leto of Gullet, the main antagonist ofThe Witcher 2: Assasins Of Kings, was a Nilfgaardian Witcher of the School of the Viper, and a potential ally inThe Witcher 3. Leto remained alive, but other Witchers from the schools of The Griffin, Manticore, Cat, Bear, Viper, and Crane might still be out there.

Geralt Riding to Touissant

3What Happened After Geralt’s Second Mutation In Touissant?

There’s No Way That Didn’t Have An Effect

There has been quite a lot to discuss when it comes to one of the side quests in theBlood and WineDLC. This particular quest drives Geralt of Rivia to a secret laboratory of a wizard who was studying a way to reverse The Witcher Mutation, hoping to allow his son, a member of the School of the Griffin, to be back to being a normal human again. As a result of pursuing the side quest “Turn and Face The Strange,” Geralt undergoes a second mutation process, which unlocks new powers.

But besides giving him a boost to his abilities is there something more that happened within his body that no one mentioned? Perhaps, the experiment was actually a success, only that it took longer than expected to become effective. Perhaps, that is one of the reasons why Geralt will be “retired,” duringThe Witcher 4,and the new game is an opportunity to explore that in depth.

Villentretenmerth The Golden Dragon Witcher

2Did The Dragons Leave The Northern Realms For Good?

They Say They’re Extinct, But We Don’t Know For Sure

Every fan who has playedThe Witcher 2: Assassin Of Kingsknows about the appearance of Villentretenmerth, also known as Borch Three Jackdaws, a golden dragon that can shapeshift into a human. Alongside the green dragon Myrgtabrakke, they sired a single hatchling named Saesenthessis, also known as Saskia the Dragonslayer.

After the events ofThe Witcher 2,dragons were basically ousted from the lore. Author Andrzej Sapkoski explains that as the world’s magic declined with the corruption of men and the death of the elvenkind, so did the dragons, who were hunted to the brink of extinction. Are they really out of the picture for good? Or will we see some of these incredible beasts in The Witcher 4?Let’s cross fingers for a good-old dragon hunt, or at least, a quest to save the poor creature from an angry mob of peasants.

Regis the Vampire in The DLC Blood And Wine

1Are There More Ancient Vampires Like Regis And Detlaff?

Always Carry A Mirror & Garlic

The Conjunction of the Spheres was a cataclysmic cosmic event that merged more than two worlds together for a brief moment. During this time, some creatures managed to sip in the world ofThe Witcher, and survived throughout the eons until the times of Geralt and Ciri. One of these creatures is the friendly vampire Emiel Regis Rohellec Terzieff-Godefroy, or simply Regis.

But duringThe Witcher 3: Blood and Wine,Geralt faces the most dangerous foe of his entire career: The Ancient Vampire Detlaff. Needless to say, Regis was quite chatty and revealing during this DLC, and he disclosed the existence of other vampires, some even older and more powerful than himself or Detlaff. If one of these was strong enough to finally force Geralt to retire to a vineyard, just imagine whatan Ancient Vampire antagonistcould do inTheWitcher 4.
