Summary

Warcraft Rumblerecently stealth-buffed the Mountaineer, with the mini now costing less to deploy, gaining the Taunt talent ability at baseline, and the Dwarf having slightly more health. Previously considered to be one of the worst units in the game, this big improvement to the Mountaineer is live inWarcraft Rumbleright now.

With over 60 minis and counting,Warcraft Rumblehas no shortage of powerful unitswhich are used in many armies, such as Harpies, Quilboar, and the Huntress. However, some minis leave much to be desired, such as the Mountaineer, a pair of units including a Dwarven rifleman and his trusty bear companion.

In an attempt to make the Mountaineer a better mini, Blizzard recently buffed the dynamic duo, though it made no mention of it in any patch notes outside theWarcraft RumbleDiscord. As of the update, Mountaineer costs one less gold to deploy, and the Dwarf’s health has been slightly increased. What’s more, the bear’s Taunt ability from the Intimidation talent is now a baseline skill, with the talent itself now giving the bear an AoE stun every 10 seconds instead, more closely imitating theHunter ability of the same name inWorld of Warcraft. Additionally, the Frenzied Spirit talent now fully heals the unit who survives, and the Mend Pets talent provides more healing than before.

This buff has definitely made the Mountaineer a more viable unit. The mini’s biggest drawback was its prohibitive cost of six gold, so the reduction makes it much more feasible to include in various armies, especially with the native Taunt ability for the bear. Most players seem to think Intimidation is still the best talent to pick, and though he is still unlikely to become an instant pick for most strategies, it seems likeupgrading thisWarcraft Rumbleminiis more worthwhile than it was before.

That said, one big concern about this Mountaineer buff actually comes from solo content. Certain PvE maps, such as Heroic Ursius and Electrocutioner 6000 – the second map of the Gnomeregandungeon inWarcraft Rumble– throw a lot of Mountaineers at players, which could be hard to counter without the right units. These enemy bears now have Taunt even without any talents, making contending with Mountaineers that much harder.

A new in-game event called Mountaineer Mastery is scheduled to begin on June 09, 2025, at 10 AM PST, which will highlight the buffs to this mini. While the specifics of the event won’t be known until it starts, it will likely last for a week, and offer gold, Arclight Energy, stars, and other in-game items as rewards for players to upgrade their Mountaineer.
