Horizon’s Multiplayer, Story-Focused Spin-off Explained
In a December 2022 open positions update followingForbidden West’s release, Guerrilla Games announced that they were working on a “separate online project set in theHorizonuniverse." Guerrilla later elaborated that the online game would feature a new cast of playable characters and a unique stylized look. Since then, there have been little to no official posts about the multiplayer game, but official job listings have hinted at some features gamers can expect from the game, such as matchmaking, player progression, cooperative challenges, andnew and oldHorizontribes and machines appearing as enemies. Based on other job listings, thisHorizonspin-off may be structured like a more story-focused version ofDestinyas Guerrilla intends for this game to entice players for many years.
Horizon’s NCSoft MMORPG Spin-off Explained
Rumors of aHorizonMMO in development by the South Korean video game developer NCSoft first began in 2022, buta partnership between NCSoft and Sonywas later confirmed in 2023. Codenamed Project Skyline, theHorizonMMO hasn’t been officially announced, but job listings and anonymous reports have revealed information on the rumored project. It will reportedly run on Unreal Engine 5 and be released on PC and mobile platforms with a possible later release on PS5. Job listings of Project Skyline have suggested that it will feature player freedom and fun, systematic gameplay. TheHorizonMMO is expected to launch after the release of NCSoft’s upcoming MMOAion 2, which itself is expected to release in mid or late 2025.
What Players Can Expect for Horizon 3 in 2025
If the multiplayer, story-focusedHorizonspin-off or the NCSoft MMORPGHorizonspin-off do release at some point in 2025 or at least have official titles or gameplay teases revealed, Guerrilla Games may soon thereafter tease details ofthe eventualHorizon 3to close out Aloy’s trilogy.Horizon 3is confirmed to be in development, but it’s expected to still be in its early stages with Guerrilla focusing on other projects such asLEGO Horizon Adventuresand theHorizonmultiplayer spin-offs. Guerrilla’s multiplayer spin-off is believed to release beforeHorizon 3sometime in 2025 as it’s been in development as early as 2018. All that’s currently known aboutHorizon 3is that it will feature Aloy as the protagonist defending Earth from the incoming alien Nemesis.
By early 2025, it’ll be three years sinceHorizon Forbidden Westwas released and, while Guerrilla has been busy with multipleHorizonspin-offs, it would make sense for them to at least teaseHorizon 3at some point next year.Horizon Zero Dawnwas first announced in 2015but released in 2017.Horizon Forbidden Westwas first announced in 2020 but released in 2022. Based on these previous game releases,Horizon 3could be officially announced in 2025 with a possible short teaser trailer or title reveal, but it may not release until 2027. SettingHorizon 3for a 2027 release could be fitting as it would align with the franchise’s celebratory 10th anniversary.
