Marvel Rivalshas enjoyed a great deal of success since the day it was released. This has included a jaw-dropping player count in its earliest weeks, along with generally positive reception from this growing base of players. Role Queue in Marvel Rivals Could Do More Harm than Good

As with many things surroundingMarvel Rivals, the current discussion of role queue should sound very familiar to anyone who is familiar withOverwatch.Overwatch 2remains the dominant force in the hero shooter genre, andMarvel Rivals' biggest competition.Marvel RivalsandOverwatchhave a strong connection, so it makes sense for one to take cues from the other when sorting through such a major challenge.
WhenOverwatchfirst released, it was the Wild West. Most characters were severely unbalanced, whether they were overpowered or underpowered. Likewise, there were very few restrictions on how a group of players could build their team. The game became much more balanced over time, but with many more restrictions as well.Overwatchcertainly wasn’t a better game in its infancy than it is now, but it’s also true that thoseearly days ofOverwatchwere packed with fun.
Role queue is one restriction added toOverwatchthat has long carried with it a great deal of controversy. In essence, players were suddenly forced to map their team onto a predetermined team composition. This ensured players wouldn’t have to suffer through playing in a team where nobody wanted to sub in for an important role, but it also eliminated some variance fromOverwatchin general. Once again, it was not a wholly bad decision, but it remains controversial in certain corners of the community to this day.
Marvel Rivals Doesn’t Need Role Queue to Stay Competitive
Unfortunately, instilling aMarvel Rivalsrole queue now is very likely to cause the exact same controversy as it did when it was first added toOverwatch. That isn’t to say thatMarvel Rivalsdoesn’t face any challenges with matchmaking, it still does to an extent. First and foremost,Marvel Rivalsis jam-packed with Duelists.
Considering Duelists are the resident DPS characters,Marvel Rivalsneeds more Vanguardsand Strategists to compensate. With the current imbalance, it’s not uncommon to load up a game where four of the six players automatically lock into DPS, and no one seems to want to play a tank or support. This dynamic could theoretically be solved by creating a role queue, but that actually isn’t the only solution.
Anyone hoping to avoid an unfortunate team blunder should definitely try playing with friends. Even adding one other person allows a player to organize better within the team than if they were solo queuing. More importantly, the biggest piece of advice is to simply not be part of the problem. Sometimes, wanting more support players on a team can only be solved by being the one to pick up support.
These solutions may seem very impermanent, but that’s exactly what makes them preferable to the alternative. The more permanent solution would be forMarvel Rivalsto add enough characters to create a more balanced roster, but this is obviously out of players' hands. If role queue were to be implemented, it could run the risk of alienating casual and competitive players alike. Restricting options for team composition would be a huge let-down for players who are currently enjoying thedynamic meta ofMarvel Rivals.
