Summary
Xboxfans should check their messages, as Microsoft is handing out free $5 gift cards. The promotion comes as the big Xbox Countdown Sale continues to bring great deals to ring in the new year. While the sale happens every year, it seemsXboxis going the extra mile this time around and spreading the holiday spirit through extra spending cash for lucky gamers.
TheXbox Countdown Sale 2024 runs through January 2, with deals across the Microsoft Store for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC titles. These deals may not come as much of a surprise to fans, but some gamers have opened their message requests to find an unannounced but welcome bonus in the form of free money.
Microsoft didn’t formally reveal the handout, but Xbox users who received gift cards have begun sharing their luck on Reddit. According to one screenshot, the $5 credit can go toward games, add-ons, movies, and apps on the U.S. Microsoft Store. While this particular message only mentions the U.S., some users report the promo is running in Canada, too. It’s also unclear if the credit works onthe new Microsoft mobile store, but gift cards typically work between Microsoft and Xbox stores, so it may be worth trying.
Microsoft Hands Out $5 Gift Cards to Random Users
This isn’t the first time Microsoft or Xbox has given out in-store credits. In 2023,Xbox gave free gift cards to someRainbow Six Siegeplayers, but this promo isn’t tied to a specific game. Instead, it appears Xbox is selecting users at random. Anyone lucky enough to get selected will get a message from Xbox containing the details of their gift card, which will be redeemable until June 08, 2025, with the funds usable up to 30 days after redemption.
Given that there’s no official announcement about the gift cards, it’s not clear how many of them there are, but it’s likely that only a small percentage of Xbox users will get one. Anyone who misses out on it still has a chance to grab games for cheap, though. There’s the Countdown Sale to take advantage of, andNintendo is running an eShop saleuntil July 30, 2025. PlayStation, likewise, is discounting some titles, and PC users can capitalize on the Steam Winter Sale.
