Summary
After Update 1.4 made changes to how the camera interacts with character models inZenless Zone Zero, HoYoverse released a quick fix to address claims of censorship. It’s been a busy week for the popular live-service gatcha game, asZenless Zone Zerojust released its newest update, which has brought significant changes and improvements to the overall experience.
While many would call it a natural starting point for new players,Update 1.4 forZenless Zone Zerocontinues to add new content and refine existing mechanics to further improve the game for all players. In addition to adding the highly anticipated character Hoshimi Miyabi, the update adds the concluding story arc from the launch of the game, while also adding even more endgame activities to keep players logging in. However, one change made in Update 1.4 has left many frustrated and calling out HoYoverse over perceived censorship.

Specifically,Zenless Zone Zeroplayers were upset by fading character models when moving the camera angles into certain positions. Specifically, moving the camera in close to a character, like attempting to look under Burnice’s skirt, the character would largely turn invisible. Many fans immediately pushed back on the change, accusingHoYoverse of censoringZenless Zone Zeroand calling the changes unfair.
HoYoverse Adjusts Camera Issue and Offers Free Polychromes to Players
As it turns out, HoYoverse revealed that the character model issue was actually a bug and not intentional. In a post on social media, the officialZenless Zone Zeroaccount revealed that the fading effect wasn’t working as intended and adjusted it. Essentially, characters no longer fade out completely, making them more visible than before, though not quite how it was prior to therecentZenless Zone Zeroupdate. The quick change was met positively by most fans, who praised the developer for listening to players. As a way of saying thank you, players were also gifted 300 Polychrome as well.
While HoYoverse hasn’t directly spoken about the controversy, some have theorized that the character fading wasn’t intended to add censorship and was actually implemented due toZenless Zone Zeroallowing players to switch their overworld character. Larger models, like the bear thiren known as Ben, caused issues for the dev team as his size prevented him from fitting into places like thr Random Play video store or blocking the camera completely. Going invisible if the camera got too tight would allow the player to still see what was ahead of them to try and get unstuck. Either way, it appears the main issue now has a resolution.
